While I can see some financial sense in this, I'm against it because I'm on the "going to get charged" end of the scale. I'm 6'5" and built like a refrigerator. When I was super-skinny in high school, I was still at 240. 260/265 is a good weight for me, and I'm at 280 now.

You guys are pretending it's only the 'fatties' that will be impacted by this - well if I was 280 but only 5'6" I'd be a 'fatty' - as it stands I just have a belly.

My shoulders are so wide that I don't fit into airline seats, stadium seats and most other 'normal-people' sized seats. My arms hang over both armrests but it's got nothing to do with my weight. If I'm going to be charged based on my size, I don't see how it would be unreasonable to demand seating that's "my size".

I wonder how this will affect corporate travel. My company pays for Coach fares for all of our business trips and if we want we can upgrade to business class if we pay the difference ourselves. I wonder If something like this went into affect would my company change their policy to say something like "we only pay for the first 200 pounds" then your on your own. Could something like this cause discrimination in the work place when they have to hire people for positions that require heavy traveling?

Exactly! If it were fair, then people lighter than the median weight should pay less than they would now. However, they'll probably put a fat tax on everyone over 200 lbs. while charging the exact same for everyone under 200 lbs.

I'm not saying it's a bad idea, but I don't see how it will help lighter people unless it keeps the chair-and-a-half flyers out of the skies (and their fat out of my seat). They should introduce it as a fuel tax that would have to be added to everyone's ticket but will instead be charged double for those of a certain weight.

Yes really big folks that cannot fit in a single seat. This is more like freight though. You pay by size of box and its weight when you use UPS, DHL, etc.

Imagine buying tickets online and you pay a fare. This fare would be based on a baseline weight - 150 pounds for females and 200 pounds for males. If one is over those established limits their charges are adjusted accordingly at check-in. That is definitely different than what it is now.

Go to expedia.com, buy your vacation tickets, enter your current weight, gain/lose some weight, go to airport, get weighed again, pay new rate?

I don't see it happening.

Actually, they are to a degree. Obesity has been labeled as disease, there are protections against discriminating against people with medical conditions.

Try building a staircase w/o wheel chair access in a public-use facility. Try building a parking lot w/o handicap spots.

Wouldn't surprise me to see a class action lawsuit forcing airlines to have special seats for obese people. Just like handicap spots.

Ya this is a really slippery slope. There is a lot of material for the right lawyer to go to town on with this one. I don't think airlines are going to be able to enforce this.

If you look at the physics of flying you would realize that this doesn't make much sense. The weight of the passengers is just a small part of the overall weight. Also the weight comes into play mostly when you're accelerating. Once you're in steady flight, it's the drag of the plane that you need to overcome. Now weight is indirectly related to drag since you need to fly faster to create more lift for a heavier plane but that's going to be a real small change.

Making extra big people buy two tickets makes sense but ticket prices based on weights don't.

Not really when you look at it compared to handicap spots. The business has to provide these premium spots at their cost. You don't think those spots at the front of the store are free do you?

Apply that to airlines and obese people and you'd have set number of wider seats provided at no additional charge to the customer. Probably at the front of the plane (aka 1st class) where there's already wider seats...
