I wish gas was $5/gallon so SUV's would start to disappear and electrics would take off.

Like electricity is really a better alternative. What do you want more nuke plants, more hydro dams to kill salmon, or more natural gas plants? All of these are terrible for the enviroment. Their performance is terrible and they need to be so light at high speeds they are dangerous because they lack the heavy stell saftey components. Also all the copper they need to get for the motor windings would mean more strip mining. I can see that all Cars should run on lp (propane) of cng (compressed natural gas) wich has way less emissions than the gas counterparts. Electric vehicles are not even a reasonable solution. Maybe if you are single and don't drive for more than 20 minutes and not on the freeway. That is why the Hybrids are the new talk still uses gas but much less. They could take this a step further and go with Hybrids that run on cng or That would be a better option. But still hybrids lack in the performance we desire and are very small vehicles. Also Batteries in their production, and disposal cannot be good fro the enviroment either.

All good points. But it would be a step in the right direction. There are always externalities when major shifts in consumption occur. From my position, cleaner running cars would be well worth those that may occur in more isolated areas. It's the pervasive presence of inefficient internal combustion motors that make its impact so ubiquitous. Some pressure to improve would be nice. A sin tax is a start.

It's $0.95 here in Knoxville, TN. My mother lives near Atlanta, and if she wants to drive a little, can get it for under $0.80 now. Amazing.

Still begs the point.. cheap gas = gas consuming lifestyle of the American way.

High prices for a while lead to decreased purchases of wasteful SUV's. Too bad it didn't last - maybe we would have seen some cleaner streets.

Keep on going folks. Buy your SUV's to continue depending on gas from Saudi Arabia and Iraq.

not hot, $.98 in some places around here
there's no difference in gasoline except for the extra detergents and additives they put into the gasoline, so I don't see why it would matter

Do anandtechers use 87 octane gasoline? If you don't, read on; the following may be a "hot deal":

From a post I placed on another board:

Straight from Car and Driver:

"When a spark plug fires, it does not cause an instantaneous explosion of the entire cylinder's charge of fuel and air. The spark actually lights off a small kernel of air-and-fuel mixture near the plug. From there, a flame front expands in every direction, gradually igniting the rest of the air and fuel. This takes some time, as much as 60 degrees of crankshaft rotation.

Meanwhile, the air-and-fuel mixture that the flame front has not yet reached is experiencing huge increases in pressure and temperature. If any part of this air-and-fuel mixture gets heated and squeezed enough, it will explode spontaneously, even before the flame front ignites. This self-ignition is called detonation, or the dreaded "knock.""

Basically, the right way for gas to burn is to burn in a controlled "flame front". If the timing is too agressive, the fuel-air mixture will explode while the pistons are not in the correct position to receive the forces generated by the sudden violent expansion of the gas in the cylinder, putting a large amount of stress on the engine parts involved (valves, pistons etc). The function of timing is to correctly "anticipate" when each piston will fire, such that only one piston fires while the other 3 pistons are "resting". Kind of like how when you walk you move only one leg at a time, to make the most efficient stride, to prevent undue stress on your leg muscles. Hopping with both feet together may work for a while, but eventually your muscles will get tired, and you might even injure yourself seriously hopping around like that all the time.

Also, read:
"Mind you, premium fuel does not necessarily pack more energy content than does regular. Rather, it allows more aggressive engine designs and calibrations that can extract more power from each gallon of gasoline." If your engine is not tuned to take advantage of the higher knock resistance of premium gas, you're burning your money up in the engine. Kind of like how eating an energy bar won't really help you unless you're a marathon runner (sports car) rather than a couch potato (geo metro). How does that translate for you and me? If you have a car that asks for premium, use it. If you don't, use regular.

One thing I know about Costco is that they never skimp on quality. You may find closeouts or one size fits all or you can have any color you want as long as it is black items but quality is spot on for the most part. I seriously doubt they'll skimp on gas quality.
