Costco is overhyped

Just signed up for costco since I could split the cost with someone and I was very underwhelmed with the prices. Most items were around the same price or more expensive than the grocery I frequent, except you have to purchase a larger quantity at Costco. One outlier was milk which is significantly cheaper, but I'm not sure going about 2 miles out of my way to save just on milk is worth it. I didn't see much if any savings on the meat I frequently buy although I guess I didn't check the ground turkey. I'm pretty sure this overhyped reputation Costco enjoys is just another part of the fake news liberal media. I'll give it another couple visits before I decide whether to cancel or not.

You have to pick and choose just like any store. In most cases a membership doesn't make sense unless you're cooking for a large number of people. They often have deals on specialty goods but, you have to have a need for it. They usually have pretty good deals on milk, six dz. eggs, large blocks of cheese, pet food, some meats, booze, clothes and bad beer.

No but srsly, you gotta just pick your stuff right. Things like TP and paper towels with coupons is hands down cheaper than a grocery store. Also I buy a huge thing of dry black beans to go in my pressure cooker, and plenty of other food items that are way cheaper at Costco.... Stacy's Pita chips too, etc...

There are some items though (For example, I like Monster Energy) - the 24 packs are cheaper to buy on fucking Amazon and have them shipped to me than going to a Costco store... which is totally screwed up. How is it cheaper to ship an individual 24-pack to a residence than it is to send a huge pallet of 24-packs to a store?

We have a Sam's Club about 4 miles from the house, but just joined Costco myself, just over an hour drive from home.
Many things are within pennies of each other between the two, primarily the canned, bottled, stuff such as ketchup, mustard, beans, etc. Many things at Costco are much better, primarily meat and fresh foods. Got some awesome steaks for grilling that just aren't available at Sam's. Kirkland brand coffee is excellent, and their grain free dog food is much cheaper than other grain free dog foods. (grain based food doesn't agree with our Plott Hound)

I still have my Costco membership.

They used to have these amazing frankfurters by Shopy's (it's a Canadian thing). They were 1/4lb all beef hot dogs that were worth the membership alone. 2 Packs together for $12. Now they are no longer available.

I still buy other things from time to time when I need them.

My wife has a Costco membership and her friend has Sam's. They both go shopping together and divide up the perishables that come in huge packages. This is working out nicely. We alone can't use up two loaves of bread (that's how it's packaged) before it goes bad but we can use one. Same with the big packages of fruit, etc. And I don't want to start the "freeze what we can't use right away" as experience has shown it doesn't get used. It sits in the freezer until it's past its prime.

When I got my LASIK done in Sudbury we went to check out Costco after. I found it pretty epic in there just because of the massive scale of the store itself and all the items too. While it would be cool to have one here, in reality I'm not sure how much I'd actually go there, probably not enough to justify paying for a membership. It's probably awesome for people with lot of kids though but not so much if you're single. I want stuff in smaller quantities, if anything.

Costco's here in MA don't seem to sell gas but when I lived in CA and WA, gas was was cheaper. Thankfully, BJs Warehouse has started selling gas and premium is about 50 cents/gallon.

Never been to costco, but I was unimpressed with the couple warehouse membership stores I checked out. Prices weren't that great, and stuff came in sizes not particularly useful. Also, limited brands. Might be good for quasi institutional use, but I don't see much point for small households.

Their pizza sucks. Costco has good quality. However, I don't know if it's worth the yearly membership fee. Plus, I don't need the quantity. I have bought a few things with someone else membership.

Things like trash bags, detergent, nuts, olive oil, coffee, rotisserie chicken, frozen veggies/fruit, fish, beef, pork, beer, bread, milk, eggs, gas off the top of my head are well worth it. I haven't been able to find the quality for the same price/unit. We buy most other things at Aldi.
