I absolutely can't believe that anyone would admit to this - let alone do it! And the guy with the scanner and 6 year old TV... un-friggin-believable...

But yes, Costco kicks much ass. I just bough 2 tires from the Foster City, CA store and the mechanics were awesome. They even told me about a slight alignment and shocks problem they found and gave me the name of a mechanic they refer people to. Very class operation.

Before moving to the bay area, I lived in Columbus Ohio and Sam's Club had similar return and exchange practices. Kohls is another good store in terms of CS and returns on broken or unsatisfactory products...

I heard that costco won't mount tires on your car if its not the factory spec'ed size. my boss told me this because he has a bigger size tires on his F150 before taking it to costco, and had to settle for a smaller, factory size inorder for them to put it on his car. They'll put the tires on the rims, but won't put the rims w/the new tires on the car. i find this very strange but it happened to my boss at work several weeks ago.

thats true... i tried to put bigger than stock tires (32's) on my friends '88 ranger (which was lifted and already had 33's) and they said they wouldnt do it because of liability reasons.

I was there today checking on plasma+ dlp tv's and this lifetime warranty is still in effect in Nj. I asked about extended warranties and the lady at service asked why I would want one when I can return it any time for any reason. Am still trying to decide which to buy tomorrow. The very nice lady said to keep my receipt to get the full price back on my return. I should have bought my last rpt tv there as it died the last day of warranty.

Last time I went to Costco was a couple of weeks ago. I brought along the cheap answering machine (around $25) I bought there 4-5 years ago (1999 or 2000 I guess). For the last couple years at least it sometimes doesn't take someone's message. It just stops recording and usually the caller doesn't even know it. They don't pause, nothing, they'll be in the middle of a sentence (and usually at the beginning) and BAM, the machine cuts off and they don't know it. I've missed a number of important messages because of that and I've been intending to replace the machine. This thread put the notion in my head that I should bring it back, get my money back, walk in the store and buy another. After around 15 minutes of checking out stuff in his computer system, the guy tells me that they wouldn't accept it. He said it's not their policy. I think he said something about them not making it anymore or something like that, can't exactly remember. I didn't argue with him, just put it back in my backpack and did my shopping. I couldn't find any kind of answering machine that suited me, so I'm still using the old one. All the ones they had included phones, and I just don't need any more phones. Also, they're all quite a bit more expensive - at least $60-$100. Screw it. I should never have put my old cassette answering machine on the sidewalk. I still have some neat cassette recording greetings for that. This digital AFAIK doesn't support greetings other than my own voice.

I think maybe the digital answering machine wasn't working right because of the way I had it hooked up with my DSL. I have it in a different room now and independed of my DSL splitters, filters, etc. Maybe it will do better.

costco rox. i knew about this policy, but now that i've read this thread, i think i will try to shop there more. or even buy a membership since asking my family is bothersome.

ethics- i'm sure costco is fully aware of this. when computer returns started to be taxing, they changed it. they'll change the policy on other items if it ever poses a problem obviously. in the meantime, it rox.

Oh, no doubt about it. From the first time I shopped there it's been a favorite place to shop. This is not even thinking about their return policies, which I've never really availed myself of, although I tried, as described in my last post. I have shopped there regularly since I joined and that must have been around 1990 or even a bit earlier. I did one time buy a Sony 300 disk CD changer and couldn't believe it didn't have a basic feature I expected. I found a player at Good Guys that had my feature so I brought the Sony back to Costco - I'd only had it a couple of days, returned it with all the orginal stuff and got a refund. That's nothing more than almost any electronics store would do. They all seem to have a 30 days return policy, I believe.

I think Costco is becoming more strict on their return policy. There is a sign at Costco now that says computers and accessories now have a 6 month return policy.

Last month I saw some lady arguing with the manager about returning a used cell phone. She thought she could return it but the manager would not let her.

I think they are catching on to all the people abusing their return policy.

I love Costco still even though they are more strict on their return policy. I still go there religiously every weekend to buy groceries and other supplies. Even if the price is sometimes a little higher (ie diet coke), I dont care because they have been so cool and I am loyal to them.

Speaking of Diet Coke, I used to always stock up on their Simply Soda brand of Diet Cola. Later, they changed the name to Kirkland, same stuff I think. Way cheaper than the Pepsi and Coke diet colas and I thought it just as good. They stopped selling it a few months ago, I think maybe because of a shortage of Splenda, which would drive up their costs. I remember spotting a newspaper article about a shortage of Splenda, the modern artificial sweetener.

Every week would be way too often for me. I always stock up so I don't have to go back for at least 2 months, or try to. When I went on my bike, that was harder to do. You should have seen me with 100+ lb. of stuff on my bike. I kid you not!

Costco Does take Used Cell Phones. She probably forgot her receipt. I have seen this as recently as last month.

I have 2 favorite stories about Costco.

1) Someone comes in with a receipt and box to return item. What is he missing? The item itself. He said he 'lost' it and Costco needed to give him 'complete satisfaction'. LOL! He even had to have a floor manager brought in to tell him that he's SOL.

2) Another customer shows up without a receipt for something he bought 6 months previous. When he asked about looking up his receipt the employee called him a 'rude' customer for not bringing a receipt and making other people wait in line longer for a return and Costco doesn't keep computer records longer than a week. Funny thing was, the other 2 return people were tied up because a guy in line was returning a fridge without a receipt and they were looking it up for him. That employee got written up promptly by the store manager

Owells my 2 cents for this thread

Forgot to add, the key to returning things to Costco, is HOW LONG YOU HAVE BEEN A MEMBER! If you are new, no way you are getting away with any returns, the longer you have been a member the better.

Come on, guys. Use common sense and show some ethical responsiblity. If you, in good faith, are not happy with an item, they'll let you return it.

Say you purchased a blender a year ago based on an in-store demo, used it once or twice, and realized 18 months later that the purchase was a mistake. Then Costco will almost certainly accept it back.

But if you buy a pair of jeans from Costco, use them for 18 months, and after they're worn out you try to return them? Or a computer that two years later isn't as fast as you'd like? COME ON! Don't be rediculous and don't be an A__hole about Costco's policy.

Shira, no matter what you say, there are people who do that.
I would hope NONE of those people frequent Anandtech.

Costco has a nice policy that's all the thread is really about,

BTW You cant return a computer 2 years later. 6 months is all it is.

is it only a computer/notebook, or does that not include peripherals like memory/printers?

For what it's worth, it's the first and only time I've done that. If someone started to abuse the policy, I'm sure they'd note it on their membership profile.

That is pathetic, how cheap can you possibly be to bring in a four year old monitor and ask for your money back. You ought to seek counseling!

I have been told by mulitple employees they can look up a receipt so this is not need ed for a return but all the items(do not need the box)

They have said to me you can return an item for life in most cases...I asked about an LCD monitor..one employee at the service desk said for as long as your member...another said a 1 yr

Bottom line is do not abuse a great policy...for the most part they are very nice and pleasant to deal with

Love the place

Hate to see idiots trying to screw..I lost the item and I want my money back...crap

Well, they sent me off SOL when I brought back my 5 year old answering machine that didn't operate acceptably on occasion. I didn't bitch. Seems likes Costco's return policy is very much a YMMV type of thing. They tell one person one thing, another person something entirely different. One of those types of things. I try to keep my receipts, but don't always. I didn't have mine from the answering machine, but I did have the instructions. I'm going in there today to buy a car battery. I think their deals on car batteries are fairly good. I paid about $61 for one a couple of years ago (for my other car) and it had a 7 year prorating warranty and 2 years at 100%. I guess I'll have to put it in myself and bring my baddy to Kragen, but that's no biggie.
