I picked up 30gig Video for 279.

Not a bad deal... Just wanted to let you know since the return policy IMO is worth paying for...

I think I just may return it. First IPOD I have ever owned. If you ever wanted to try out an IPOD and be able to return it with out any problems this may be an answer for you.

Good:
Nice and Small ... 30 Gig is a lot of space.
Thumb Wheel rocks!
MP3's Sound excellent and plays loud.

BAD:
you have to use Itunes it's bloated and I just don't like the interface. Why can't we just Mount the Unit and drag and drop. There probably is a 3rd party or hack to make that happen.

2) apple is so afraid of copy right laws you can't play video's with this. Unless A) you pay for them already formated for the IPOD, or you try to run your AVI's MPEGS through a converter that takes a HELLISH long time and didn't work for me...

Tho once playing the video's the small screen does a decent job of playing them if they are already a .MOV or .MP4 format. Even if they are you still have to convert them but every MOV I had on my PC converted and played. Good luck if you want to play an AVI or Mpeg clip your pretty much SOL. I didn't spend the 30 bucks to try out 3rd party softwre.

If your looking for a Video Player, Look some place else. If your looking for a music player then this does a fine job...

Oh I forgot it costs 300.00 for all this fun trying to make it work. So I maybe using Costco's wonderful return policy!

You are such a cheap bastard. First of all, we didn't need an ipod review here, everyone knows what they are. Secondly, why would you buy it if you knew you were going to return it? Just trying to be a jackass? Third, there are plenty of third party programs that can mount the ipod as a drive (www.anapod.com).

Wow, OP just trys to post what he considers a hot deal and flame him like that? Where do you get off flaming a 5 year veteran with only 8 posts? Talk about a thread crap.

Use the ATI avivo encoder for it.

There are TONS of 3rd party other than itunes. However you can't get all the features with them. Anapod Explorer is one of the better ones, you can use it in conjunction with iTunes. You can also try Xplay, Ephpod, Yami pod, and you can use the windows programs with plugins WinAmp, WMP10, MusicMatch Jukebox. To say you HAVE to use iTunes means you didn't do much research. Also go to iLounge for more ipod info than you wish was available.

The memory sticks just get cheaper and cheaper. I can fit about 5 movies on one 2gb memory stick, that's not bad at all. More than you'd need in one day....

But your going to have to decide which movies you want to watch beforehand. With an Ipod Video, you can store a bunch of movies you haven't seen, and not have to worry about syncing the stuff, etc. I own a psp so I should know the hassles of having to decide what I want to watch before hand. You can easily keep around 30-40 movies on your Ipod Video and just watch whatever ones suit you on whatever days. Not to mention the fact that the Ipod Video is a slim mp3 player first, then a video player if you feel like watching a video.

This is true. I actually own both as well. I simply like the size of the screen on the psp and the fact that it's widescreen. I just keep a bunch of files already in the psp format and throw em on every now and then. Haven't really complained about not having enough variety at any one time....

Anyone know that if a person with a Sam Club card can shop at Costco? I am out of town and we don't have any Costco at our city.

I just thought I stop by and check out Costco and see if it is all that from what I heard.

There are some decent Freeware programs that will format vdeos to play on the Ipod. One program is:

http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/iPod/

I was pretty horrified when I first started using Itunes, but you get used to it pretty quick. After my initial 2 days of agony using Itunes, I now like it. It is bloated, and loads up programs that reside in memory at startup, but its a very at organizing music as long as your music is properly tagged.

The cool thing about the Ipod is that it just shows up as a drive in windows explorer, so I use it to back up all my work.

You could probably get a visitor's pass, but Sam's Club and Costco are direct competitors to each other.

Are you a Software Engineer OP? If not how do you know that ITunes is "bloated software"?

Just get a cheap DVD player and write them to DVD! Kind of like people try to get a UHF/VHF scanner that will do a good job in HF too. Isn't happening, but a good shortwave reciever is avaliable for under fifty bucks. Who would want to watch a vid on a screen that small anyway? I could see the IPOD vid being useful if it would allow a user to monitor the IPOD music on the big screen when using it as a source for the entertainment center. OP, does it allow that? Does it have a vid output?

Sadly, I agree with a n00b People like OP force good retailers like to Costco to implement more stringy return policies.

^^^I'm with that guy. There's no reason to abuse a return policy like that. OP also did NO research into how easy it is to turn an iPod into a drag and drop device.

I though you could drag and drop into an ipod. Atleast that is whatit says in the Ipod mini manual.
