what is costco's return policy... I am very suspicious of mp3 player reliability as I have owned 3 from different manufacturers and they have all given me problems. The nano comes w/ a 1 yr warranty right? How long does costco cover the electronics that they sell??

^^^I'm with that guy. There's no reason to abuse a return policy like that. OP also did NO research into how easy it is to turn an iPod into a drag and drop device.

Me too. Costco will someday discontinue thier generous policy. Like always, a couple fsktards destroy a good program trying to take advantage.:brokenheart:

I honestly don't think Costco would change their return policy even if a larger number of people begin "abusing" the policy (although it's not really abuse since it's perfectly within the policy). First off, what makes Costco great IS it's generous return policy. I shop at Costco because I know that if I don't like something or if it breaks, I can return it at any time. It's not like I go there because I enjoy buying in bulk. It would be similar to Walmart raising the prices of everything because of some sort of policy abuse. It just wouldn't be Walmart anymore and they would lose a ton of customers.

Second, for the most part it's the manufacturers that eat the cost of the return, not Costco.

Third, Costco can and will simply cancel the membership of individual people who go crazy with the policy.

except you don't have the space to store the info

The memory sticks just get cheaper and cheaper. I can fit about 5 movies on one 2gb memory stick, that's not bad at all. More than you'd need in one day....

QFT.

PSP FTW.

Second, for the most part it's the manufacturers that eat the cost of the return, not Costco.

What difference does that make? The costs accosiated with manufacture/sales/transport and aqusition of that returned product are passed along to the consumer eventually thus paying higher prices than we otherwise would.

Either
A) Since costco does'nt sell "used" or "returned" manufacturer reinburses costco for the item and shipping. Then those costs are figured into price of items sold to costco in the first place which end up higher.

b) Costco eats the item and sells other items at a higher price to make up for the loss.

But in either of these scenarios someone is taking advantage and getting a free ride while others are paying a premium for it. It's like socialism or welfare at the store level.

I have no problem with returning defective mechandise. I just returned some pans to Costco because they wouldnt sit flat on my glass stove top but had bows in them. But I did it after three weeks not three years! And not to "try" either.

I honestly don't think Costco would change their return policy even if a larger number of people begin "abusing" the policy

You may be right but they only have two choices. 1) discontinue policy that's being abused 2) raise prices to cover the abuse. Both choices will lose Costco customers which is bad for Costco and Bad for consumers so why would you do something detremetal?

Sorry, but i agree with the n00b here. #1 - Do more research before you bash something and #2 - Don't abuse a generous policy or it won't be around much longer.

i see nothing wrong with the OP returning the product if he doesnt like it. That is costco's policy and i dont see any abuse doing it. I personally have been a costco member for 6 years and have yet to return an item even though i spend a lot of money there(i actually like to buy some stuff in bulk).

2nd no OP should be required to list all details regarding a product or do all possible research. He or she is obviously wrong about a few details and a better post would have been you are mistaken about x, y, or z...here is a link to the correct info...please update your message to have the correct info.

No need to be insulting.

It's more than rumor. So if you are interested in a real video iPod, then wait for a month, or buy from Costco to return. (Your $100 membership covers returns). I own 3 years old 3g iPod, it's really solid device without any problem works for 6 hours every day. I surprised that people complain about iPod quality considering that new models have to be even more reliable. Probably complains go from competitors.

I don't recall reading Costco's return policy, and see it stating that when you buy the product you can't be thinking of returning it. If it did state it, then the OP would be abusing it; alas, he is not.

P.S. If you think this is abuse of Costco's system, drop by your nearby college and check out some of the students' houses...

Although the OP is not "abusing" Costco's generous return policy, the part that irks me is that he is encouraging others to just go out to "try" an iPod, then return it if you don't like it. It's not hard to read reviews first, and check out the player at Costco. Last time I checked they had stuff like this laying out for people to try out at most other retailers such as Best Buy and Circuit City.

Costco guarantees 100% satisfaction. That's on their policy because they stand by all their items and are sure enough that you will love it when you purchase it. That means if you're not satisfied with it for any reason, you are encouraged to bring it back and return it.

It's hard to try out electronics before buying them. Reviews can tell you nice things about the item, but it's all subjective and really doesn't tell you how it will work with what you want to do with it. Even going to best buy and trying it out for 15 minutes doesn't give me a good feel for the item. I can't put it in my pocket and go jogging with it, I can put it in my car etc. There are a number of reasons I can think of where I would want to really try out a 200-300 item and be able to return it if I'm not satisfied with it.

Or this may even be a killer to any new ipod video, that apple may or may not release depending on the price points when it is released 3/1/05
LINK

If it comes in under $400 retail, it will be some tough competition.

The viliv P1 PMP comes with a 30GB hard-drive, 4 inch 16:9 wide-screen with 480x272px TFT screen, Macromedia Flash player, FM-Tuner, Voice and audio recording, Speaker, CF Slot, Video and Audio Out, 6 hour video viewing battery life and 11 hours for audio. The video player supports DivX, Xvid and MPEG1/2/4. The audio player supports MP3, WMA and OGG.

no one doubts that it is wonderful to be able to return an item - but i'd hope if you're going to open an ipod you're at least reasonably sure you want it. I don't think you should be going in, trying it out then and there, then returning it.

If you buy it, try it out, and it's not everything you thought it'd be after a lot of thought and research, then power to you. But to go treat it like a free rental service seems a bit shady. It's no wonder most companies don't treat their customers like costco tries to, the customers just abuse the company senseless then.

as for trying out an ipod? It's a music player, a million people own them, they are on display everywhere (bestbuy, target, applestore, fry's, etcetc). It's not really something you need to have for two weeks to decide if you want. You either do - or you don't. Most people can figure this out without borrowing it from costco for free.

thanks for the costco heads up
boo on your ideas for 'trying them out'
