B) What rice are you using for comparison? Making "real" rice is slightly more intricate than Uncle Ben's minute rice.

Right. The Jasmine Basmati rice in the burlap sack is what we get and it's great stuff.

We use the same ones. Brand name is "Daawat" (Basmati rice from India). Expensive but Great stuff

Wut? Those are two diff'rent varieties. Mixing them for sale would make as much sense as PB&J in the same jar. That is to say, it would be a silly gimmick and eliminate the the possibility of enjoying them seperately.

Or did you mean Jasmine and/or Basmati?

depends on the variety, there are some grains that are nasty. i've never found out the name of the variety but it was so "dry" it refused to disolve when boiled for congee.

Jasmine, I believe, is just the name of the brand, but it's actually Basmati rice. Maybe I'm mistaken on the brand name. Regardless, get the rice in the burlap sack.

If you call boiling water intricate then what do you think about rocket science?

The boiling part isn't the slightly intricate part, it's the amount of water, rinsing or not rinsing, and what to do once you add the rice (how long to cook, what temp). It's not hard or anything, but minute rice is fairly forgiving compared to jasmine or similar.

There's your problem, 15 years is way too long to cook rice.

Actually, given it's Costco, you can probably take it back for a full refund . . . though I still think you're the defective part here.

Wait! Did your Mom buy you at Costco? Problem solved!

It may vary but if I recall the bags o' Basmati (not actually big burlap sacks) which I have gotten several times from Costco is "White Tusk" brand and from another place "Baz 007" -which may be a trademark violation but is a cool name nonetheless

I thought this was the hard way. You didn't say which bag of rice you bought or what your cooking method was.

all i remember was that it was some american grain...
tossed the bag a while ago it had odd cooked texture, like the grains were way too separate in a bad way in your mouth. totally bad mouth feel. and yea i cooked it for hours and i was amazed that it resisted becoming a smooth congee, it didn't get even close, it had a strange insoluble quality about it. maybe its some bizarre ge frankenfood rice. and of course worse of all, it tasted horrible.

Costco doesn't carry a store brand rice. The rice they sell can be bought at most stores. The OP doesn't know how to make rice.

Okay, just got home. It's DAAWAT basmati rice. Being burlap, it looks cool in the corner of our eat-in kitchen by the hutch.....kind of like a rustic third world decoration.

This is correct. American rice sucks. Thai Jasmine rice in the 25 lb 'Flying Horses' 'Twin Elephants' 'Whatever the hell they decided to name it that day' bags with all the funky medals and ribbons on them is the only way to go.

Well just a warning to anybody thinking about buying the rice at costco

without a brand your thread is crap.

They sell difference brands in different markets...they used to stock Kohoko Rose (sp) and that is a decent rice.
