Well it looks like Costco just started carrying the Samsung 215TW. I just bought one out here in Maui where I live yesterday.

Gaming in F.E.A.R. has been awesome, the only issue I saw with the LCD was some minor background leakage, very faint, nothing noticeable at all gaming.

I noticed over at Tweaks R US site, on their HOME page, LOOK at the upper left and right of the page, it is slightly lighter in color a BLENDED color, it goes from the top on the left, down to the "Home" link and on the right side the same length down.

Some people might not notice this slight lighter shade they have on the website, but with the LCD I see that light area show up with horizontal bands running through it, it's not smooth and clear.

Personally this banding was the only big thing I noticed about this LCD.

With tkknights banding tools he made I did not notice any banding, other then a few very slight strips that would appear at the bottom of all the tests on the lower left grey scale side appearing as very faint vertical stripes, around 3-4 of them.

Looking straight on they where barely noticeable, you typically had to move your head left and right to see them better.

But as far as banding in all the colors showing all over the place there was none.

And 2D Image quality and text on this LCD was very nice, clear and crisp.

In F.E.A.R. I had the game on 1680x1050 all game settings on MAX, using the latest XTreme-G 84.56.v3 Public Beta driver and I was really impressed with the gaming in this thing, no lag, tearing, ghosting, nothing.

One thing though, when going into darker areas on a map, where say your gun isn't as visible I notice the image of the weapon isn't all that noticeable, like if you where looking at it on angle the way a LCD would look off set viewing. Maybe this is common on a LCD or just particular panels.

So that was a slight let down loosing image quality some what in shadows, lower lighted areas on a map.

Because of this slight background leak and color gradient banding, I'm going to take it back today and swap it for another one.

Let you all know how that one goes. In the meantime if I can get one without any background leakage and no gradient banding, I think until something better comes along in the 23"-24" range this is going to be a nice keeper till then.

Seems like a great monitor from the reviews I have read so far. I am looking into replacing my Gateway FPD2185W with one of these. Does the monitor happen to have the dreaded "screen door" effect? Some people say it does and some do not, so it's hard to decide. There isn't a local place that carries it, as my local BestBuy does not stock it. Please post your results with the new unit once you exchange it.

Well I just got the new one, sitting in the box next to me, so I'll have it up and running shortly.

The first one I bought did not show any signs of "screen door" effect. In fact the desktop was crystal clear.

Be back later, I hope this is a good one.

Ok back and up and running on this second one. Here is a screenshot at this point, what Anandtech looks like with it.

Looking at that pic, I'd say the text is a little bit sharper too, then this picture. So far I am amazed at how clean and clear this is for the money. This looks as good as the Apple ACD 23" that sells for $1300.

The viewing images are very clean too, later I can take some different shots to show people view angles and what gaming looks like.

So far I haven't checked to see if there is any background leakage.

Be back later

Please get a picture taken with a digital camera if it isn't too much trouble. The more I consider this monitor the more I want one. I just wish Gateway hadn't screwed up the 2185W the way they did. I have been through four of them, and the stupid buzzing/whining is so bad I can't stand it. I have a very nasty type of migraine that I get quite often, and either the noise or the screen door effect of this monitor seem to set it off.

I noticed no significant backlight bleed. Certainly while gaming, using the "gaming" mode which has contrast/brightness near max, you could not notice any backlight bleed.

I think the off-center viewing angle issue that this, and most LCD's, have can be confused with backlight bleed. There is a slight, but noticeable, drop in contrast when viewing at an angle. Since it is a wide angle, you'll always be viewing the edges at an angle when vieing the center dead-on. Therefore the sides of the monitor will appear brighter than the center - and this could be confused with backlight bleed. Moving your head so the edge of the screen is viewed dead-on will reveal this.

In a dark room, in game mode and with a dark screen, you may notice the spotlights. Again, this affect is emphasized by the off-angle viewing.

I've discussed this monitor in the following thread:

Forum Thread on 215tw

Here's some p-base photos, including pictures (not screen captures) of Oblivion. They aren't the best, but I've include one of my CRT for comparison. I've taken photos at different resolutions too.

Bought one at CompUSA - love it, love it, love it! I can see the off-center viewing spotlight/bleed on a black screen, but it is VERY minor and doesn't show up in anything I've noticed so far.

Love it!
