They were giving away the Blue card to everyone as far as I know in 99 or so at my University. If college students with no job can get one I would assume anyone with a pulse can get one.

I got no love for AMEX. They charge us considerably more for every swipe.

By accepting only AMEX costco has excluded a lot of people from being able to charge their purchases. I like AMEX too, but not everyone has one. More people qualify for Mastercards than AMEX. This change will open the ability to charge to more customers. That has to be good for business and those who will now be able to charge at Costco.

And they still make money hand over fist.

And if they switch to VISA or MasterCard, then they'll also accept other issuers' VISA or MasterCard. Few members are going to get pissed about that. But Costco _would_ likely issue far fewer co-branded cards, because most people already have those cards.

That's one of the reasons that I find it difficult to believe Costco is paying zero transaction fees on charges. If they can negotiate with another card company, what else is there to gain? The'll almost certainly issue fewer cards, so will make less on their members using their Costco credit card. If they can't negotiate a lowered percentage rate on transaction, there isn't much else to negotiate.

Their hotdogs at the food counter are purchased regionally it seems. They taste very different in Michigan than in Florida. And frankly, neither of them are that good but the price is definitely right. Quick, dirt cheap lunch.

I only gobble the all beef weiners nowadays.

I like the Oscar Mayer Selects/Angus kind. Can find them most anywhere (versus regional) and cook up well in the microwave :hmm:

That sucks. I guess we'll have to see what cards costco will start accepting instead. I like my amex blue card a lot, if they don't start taking any visa/mc (not just the one branded by them), I'll have to drop my costco membership.

meh, doesn't bother me any. I use my debit card at costco anyway. Ironically I used my Amex card for the first time in about 2 years this week only because the place I was buying from DIDN'T accept Discover and I'm paying down my CapOne Visa right now. Imagine that.

I almost applied for the Amex just to use at Costco but was waiting to see how this played out. Glad I didn't bother.

I'm truly surprised at the anxiety levels over this. Do you guys think that Costco is going to leave you high and dry taking the chance that they'll lose memberships over it?

My Costco AmEx is how I gain entry to Costco. The CO card will replace that card. It will give comparable if not better benefits. CO is no stranger to reward cards we have one now that accumulates dollars off towards GM car purchases and leases.

Now, maybe I'm out of the loop and am not aware that Costco accepts any variety of AmEx. If that's the case, then yes, there is reason for concern.

I'm pretty sure you can use any Amex at costco, not just their branded one.
