the COUGAR CF-V12HPB 120mm fan is on sale again for only $10 shipped @ newegg, no rebates or promo codes required. this deal expires on 2/13/13, so there's plenty of time to capitalize on the deal assuming they don't sell out (which they usually don't).

happy shopping

^ keep in mind that the above code was only sent to select newegg customer email accounts, so it won't work for everyone, myself included this time around. that said, it certainly can't hurt to try it...worst case it won't work. this fan is still a steal of a deal at $10 shipped.

Any one with experience mounting these horizontally blowing upward? Reviews make it sound like a bad idea.

someone stated in another thread here at AT that the issue has since been addressed. while i can't remember who posted it, or which exact thread its in, i did not buy these fans until after the issue was supposedly corrected. i currently have some mounted vertically and some mounted horizontally. i haven't had problems with any of them yet...then again, i've only been using them for a few months now. assuming the issue doesn't eventually crop up, these fans do exactly what i want them to do - move more air than just about any other 120mm fan at the same rpm, all while being one of the quietest (2nd only to my Scythe Kaze Jyun 120mms fans).

FWIW I just installed the 2nd fan I've gotten back after an RMA from Newegg (third fan I've now tried). All three have squealed like stuck pigs when being controlled by my motherboard's PWM. They don't do this if powered 100%, but then they're not nearly as quiet either.

Seems like they're well built but I can't stand the electronic buzzing. Going to return this one and give up on the Cougars I think.

hmm...interesting to say the least. of all the Cougar CF-V12HP's and CF-V12HP's i'm currently using, i'm pretty sure every single one of them is being controlled via mobo PWM. on top of that, none of them are running at full speed...and yet i don't get any squealing, buzzing, humming, etc...and i'm a silence freak who's bothered by the slightest of noises. i wonder if something is funky with your mobo's power delivery to the PWM fan headers...of course if you don't have this problem w/ other PWM fans, then i don't know what the heck is going on in your situation...

nevertheless, after 2 RMA's and 3 attempts trying these Cougar fans, i can't blame you for going to a different fan solution this time around...

I asked this question in another thread with some skepticism reported, but went ahead with one of them mounted horizontally in a Lian Li PC-Q25B. I've been running it for about a month now and I have no complaints.

One of the nice little touches is how carefully they sleeve all of the cabling. These are thoughtfully designed fans.

I am disappointed that the 140mm matching units are not PWM as well... but I did order a couple of these

Yeah, this was my thought too, and I wanted to check it out before writing a less-than-stellar review on Newegg. I've installed both a Prolimatech and a Logisys fan on the PWM header with no buzzing or squealing, so I could only deduce that it was the Cougars. They were mounted vertically as my rear exhaust fan.

I got two of these fans to replace my Gelid FN-SX12s that were dead quiet, but didn't move enough air. The Cougars have gotten progressively louder over the six months I've run them, so much so that I've had to use my BIOS settings to run them at about 40% to get enough cooling and not have to listen to the racket. Would not buy again.

I haven't installed them in a system yet, but I've tested these fans side by side externally against several other fans, including Gentle Typhoons, Zalman F3's, Noctuas, Noise Blockers and various stock case fans. These things kick the crap out of almost all of the fans in terms of performance/noise ratio. Only the Noise Blocker (can't recall the model number) was clearly better.
