Could a smartphone with Ethernet (or general wired connection) be feasible?

Wifi is obviously better suited to a mobile environment, but could a smartphone (or tablet even) have an Ethernet or other wired Layer 1 connection?

Talking about an RJ45 connection on a phone? That would be a really huge fat phone. There are some chunky Windows and Android tablets with RJ45.

some phones can plug into a computer via usb and use the computer's internet (kind of like reverse tethering).

not sure why you would want wired data on a phone though.

HTC's Android phones can do reverse tethering. I am pretty sure I have seen RJ45 to USB adapters as well. But why would the Ethernet's speed and latency be critical to smartphone? Several bottlenecks within the smartphone hardware would negate Ethernet's advantage over wifi and USB tethering anyway.

This might be quite useful for those who need quick access to a hardline LAN. Wifi isn't always an option.

I think you may want to try Apple's Airport Express. It's a nifty little adapter that's as big as a power adapter for most laptops, but it can take Eternet, expand it to other wireless devices, and do more...

But generally, it's a good solution for Ethernet to phone because it works with pretty much anything that supports WIFI, and if you're in a place where you need ethernet, chances are you'd have a power plug handy.

Like a wireless router then.

It's not regular wifi though, it's iFi! (patent pending) Apple uses superior quantum wave modulation converters in the Airport Express to give you the superior bandwidth you need, as well as the increased coolness you've come to expect from Apple.

i wouldnt mind one, but it better have SSD speeds on it to make use of it... meaning I could hook my phone up and copy a 16gb 1080p rip in..... 3 minutes?

This can work on non-Apple devices?

I don't see the point of ethernet (or a similar wired technology) to a phone device. Part of the attraction of mobile devices is...they're mobile. I don't want to be tied down. It's also why I found the PSP to be kinda ridiculous early on (prior to the battery improvements). A mobile gaming platform that didn't provide enough juice for you to be carry it around. You were tied to a wall socket. Ridiculous.

ummm, any wifi router does that "and more" (such as being loaded with custom firmware)

Airport Express can share any random USB external drive over the network, and supposedly sharing works with most printers. Plus it can also share a pair of external speakers over the network so you can keep holding onto your phone or tablet while blasting music into speakers 8 feet away.

And it's pocketable. Smaller than most wireless N router. The drawback is the range is subpar, and connection speed is horrible when there are too many devices connected.

I can already do that with Bluetooth connections between my phone and PC.
