Maaaaybeeeee? It really will depend on which titles you play.

Probably not. 960 is roughly equivalent to a 760 (2 years old) or a 7970 (4 years old.)

Then again, I expect you'll be bottlenecked by the 6300 well before you feel bottlenecked by the 960, so... fire away!

2 yrs if you're really lucky with a 4gb model and fast cpu. Even a Titan x won't be good 5 yrs from now.

There would be better gpu's in the price bracket. Can usually find a 280/280x for less or = to a 960 and a 290 for just a hair more money. Those card would last quite a bit longer. You'll get 3gb vram w/ the 280/x and 4gb for the 290 compared to the 2gb 960. Also, the 280/x is roughly the same performance or a little faster than the 960 while the 290 is a good bit faster.

Frankly, unless you are trying to cram this card into the smallest case known to man your best option would be a 290 for under $250.

Whoah, I totally misread this post; you were asking about five years.

I'd say the answer is "no".

if you look 5 years back, the equivalent to a 960 in price would be a GTX 460,

GTX 460 can still play most games, but, the 460 was a lot closer to high end performance at the time than the 960 is I think (480 had 480 cuda cores, 460 336, 960 is half of the 980 and that's not even the best)

Not sure. Nothing that much will change until a little bit into the next console gen. That'll probably be getting close to the 5 year time period?

So you could see it just about making it, presuming of course you'll be staying at 1080p for that time period which is quite a restriction in itself.

Depends on your expectations. I stuck an overclocked GTX 560 SE in a PC for my nephew. At 1600x900 he can play most newer games on medium settings (he's not extremely picky about FPS at 11 years old). I would think it would be about like a GTX 460 overclocked performance-wise, which is five years old. I think your CPU would be a more limiting factor five years on.

An R9 290 would probably do it if you didn't expect triple A to run well after year 3 or 4 but I wouldn't put my money on that bus width or that amount of video memory, even at 1080p (regardless of compression).

You should be able to find a 290 for about $220-230 and used for $200-210. The 960 is destined to crash in terms of longevity as most cards from nvidia are and have historically - AMD and it's GCN architecture have shown consistent improvements and the ability to withstand multiple graphical leaps far better than it's competitor.

The prices are very close; even the 3GB 280x is a no-brainer.

hell no. The gtx 960 is garbage. No matter how great the card might be, that 2GB VRAM will be holding it back. Some games RIGHT NOW is being hindered by that 2GB. At 1080p, grab something with atleast 3GB.

AM D: 7950, 7970, r9 280/x, r9 290/x
Nvidia: gtx 770 4gb, gtx 960 4gb, gtx 780/ti, 970, 980

Its a question of balance. If he intends on keeping the FX-6300 the entire five years its at least as likely, if not more, to choke on newer games than the GTX 960 2GB. If that is the case he might as well not go higher than a GTX 960 4GB or R9 280X.

Now if you plan on getting a 2nd of those down the road and use it in DX12 games that support split frame rendering (and you thus have 4GB of Vram)..it just might.

Otherwise I'd say the card is no more than a stop-gap solution and you should not expect to run a lot of stuff well after 2015.

That said...I really think in DX12 split-frame rendering in 2way SLI this card could actually hold up. Since right now it actually beats the 970 and 290X easily and even duels a 980...AS LONG AS YOU DON'T CROSS THE 2GB VRAM....which means in split-frame this thing would actually be a somewhat viable solution...but then again...only if you get it for a decent price.

Or go ahead and get 2x 4GB...but that's not worth the money at all....might as well just grab a 970 then.

I have video cards in my "collection" older than 5 yrs that run on older OS.

The simple answer to your question is yes it could last that long. If the question is, "will it be effective in running new games 5 yrs from now?" the simple answer is NO.

If you keep your present games and OS for 5 yrs I suspect it will be OK.

I don't want to be flippant in my answer. BTW 5 years is like eternity for computer geeks.

nope it can;'t even keep up with the older kepler cards.

960 would have been a great card if released in 2012.

so...like i said a great card if released in 2012.

2gb of vram does not cut it anymore.

also keeping up with a 680 3 years after it was released is not a plus.

So you wanted the GTX960 released 3 years ago at 120W and 199$. Instead of the GTX680 at 195W and 499$

Somehow I dont think you thought it through.

when you run out of memory the card really takes a dive.

Shadow of Mordor is the GTX 960 killer. If more next-gen console ports are like that (now that last gen is being dumped as a baseline) the GTX 960 (and the R9 285) will go down as some of the worst value cards of all time.

i totally agree, with the games that are put outnow and the inflated vram requirements the 960 and anything else with 2gbs is going to get worse.

5 years? more like 5 months at this rate.
