what is all the crazy over name brand RAM when almost everyone now says lifetime w. I mean paying $70+ for ram like micron and corsair 256 when you can get it for $50 to me is kind of crazy if someone could help me when this I would be very thankful

There is a quality control issue here. Lifetime warranty for ram that may be defective on arrival or break shortly down the road, versus ram from companies you can trust. Also, have you ever tried to warranty something that has a "lifetime" warranty? Godd Luck if you ever do. For the $20 (in you example) that you're saving, you losing peace of mind, and maybe even $$$'s if you have to pay shipping to send something back in for warranty replacement. Stick with Corsair/Crucial/Mushkin, I guarantee you're 99.99% headache free (though anything can happen)

What does "lifetime" mean, exactly? I would guess that any RAM we buy will be obsolete in 5 years anyways...

I've always had good results with generic "lifetime" memory for SDRAM. However I did notice that NewEgg only sells name brand DDR at the moment. Probably because of trouble they've had with cheap brands.

I read an article in PC Magazine yesterday, saying that an indepedant testing lab found that recently, 10% of memory modules failed to pass routine qualification testing. I believe these were cheaper OEM memory modules. Given that fact, and the fact that companies like NewEgg don't sell generic memory, I would probably go with a name brand for PC 2100 DDR.

I agree with both of the ppl above, plus...

If you like ocing or tweaking a bit good luck with cheap generic brands...ften they can not run much above spec whereas crucial ram at cas2.5 can run at cas 2 and often at a fsb speed above pc2400 standards...

Also many generic ram seem to be more likely to have compatability problems with certain mobos (amd systems often)...whether that is do to quality control or substandard/ bare minimum design requirements of those memory producers, I am not sure...What I am sure about is the athlon has been proven to work and need good ram void of a lot of noise....

I use to buy some generic house brand memory from this one company and they would often test and rate their memory chips based on that...I would buy it cause they had tested it and found it to be 100 percent compatabilty with certain chipsets or mobos. It was good memory but could come nowhere close to what my infineon memory of same size could do in scores and in ocing potential....
