Could I get into trouble for this?

I am working on a project and one of the new faces is someone who is religious. His phone plays gospel music or verses everytime it rings. I don't like hearing it and it really bothers me but I am not sure I can ask him to change it to something else. He's also uncomfortably calm, saying "blessed" this and "blessed" that. Something just isn't right about someone who is that calm.

It also reminds me of when I was in Afghanistan where when shit hit the fan some guys would drop to their knees and start praying. This happened often with Afghan/Pakistani civilians but also their soldiers and the occasional American. This made me not want to be around them because they'd already given up and were resigned to their fate.

Anyway, would I be crossing any boundaries if I asked him to change his ringtone? Is this considered a form of proselytizing?

ask him to put his phone on silent as all cell phones always should be.

I will never, ever understand people who feel the need to draw attention to themselves with ringtones.

Doubt it but unless you're his boss why would he listen? I'd probably tell him that phones should be on silent/vibrate while at work but that assumes that is actually true.

But would that mean I'd have to ask everyone else on the team to do the same?

This would be the only thing I can think of, since he isn't doing anything wrong.

Since it's a religious issue, I can see the employers hands being tied.

Does the Church of Satan have any ring tones.

Everyone at my workplace has to leave phones on vibrate. Policy also forbids the use of religious email signatures.

This. Ringtones of any kind in a workplace are completely obnoxious. Tell him to put the damn thing on vibrate or shove it up his ass to muffle the noise.

So what you're basically saying is that everybody should be an uptight asshole fuckhead bigot like you instead of letting trivial shit like this just roll?

You can ask him to silence/lower his ringer.

As for what language he uses,.. well, as long as he isn't making it a criteria for work (i.e. the project is a success, when Jesus approves,... etc.), then you can't do anything about that.

You can't do anything about that no matter what. God is not forbidden my friend.

We start our staff meetings out with a prayer. Does that anger you?

Kick off prayer - no. Why would it?

But, if you hire me, with a deliverable of; Jesus approves of your project (not a Hispanic, but the actual Lord and Savior of humanity), then,.. no.

Work criteria in regards to performance. Not work culture.

If you pray before work, more power to you. But, if my performance is dependant on a devine being's approval,... then you are fucking crazy.

But its not forbidden. No matter how much you wish you controlled the world, you don't.

,.. uhm.. what are you arguing exactly?? And, are you sure it should be with me?

Because if your KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) are based on God,.. you won't get jack shit accomplished.

Just like God won't pay my bills, God won't get your TPS reports done either.

You can't force him but you can always ask nicely. Just don't make the comment about what kind of ring tone he has, just that the volume disturb you in your work.

We once had prayers at the school I work, and while I'm an atheist I don't mind a few religious rituals, even though I find them a bit silly.
