Don't see why you guys can't do it, maybe you can send me the file and let me try? I've worked with multiple picture files in the 4GB range and never had an issue...

Software problem for me too. My panorama utility crashes while trying to load the picture files.

Oh, I can work with any one of them fine, and have all of them open, but trying to compost them instantly crashes the program.

Have you tried to use photomerge to combine files that size?

And you'd need twice that to have any working space to actually do anything. So 8 gb ram is really the minimum for this.

Well I'm download the pictures now. I'll steal another 1 GB of ram from another computer to bump my total up to 3GB and give it a go.

Yup, a member on the forum told me about photomerge which was nice because I was scanning in a poster of mine to work on, so I scanned at highest DPI (9600) at sections at a time but I had trouble combining the peices and so I learned of photo merge, used it and it worked for 3 of the 6 images I had scanned.

Site is down now, I'm unable to download it, what is goin on? I managed to get the first file but couldn't download the second and third file.

Weird, it appears that the server resets after a certain amount of MB transferred, takes about 3 minutes to reset then works agian.

I may be wrong, but I think one of the biggest memory hogs about PS that causes out of memory errors is that it attempts to display the entire image on the screen...

Is there any program that can stitch while in a low-res preview, possibly that can write directly to a file as opposed to just in memory?

Do you HAVE to use photomerge to do it?

I wouldn't mind seeing the pictures and thinking up an alternative solution if you don't mind the bandwidth.

Well I've got the files downloaded and I'm working on them, this "project" doesn't seem nearly as memory intensive or CPU intensive as you guys think, most of the work seems to be on the HDD's I/O operations.

Why I say it's not memory intensive is cause it's only using about 1.1GB of memory (600MB Physical memory, 580 Page file), implying it doesn't really need lots of ram but requires lots of I/O operations... (Biggest bottleneck is the Hard Drive), looks like if you wanted this done quickly, you'd need RAID with Raptors and the very least 1 raptor.

I've seen Battlefield 2 use more memory than this...

Well OdiN just tried and got a not enough RAM message... anyone with more than 2gb willing to try?

Why don't you resize the pictures a bit? Do they really need to be huge?

I think he needs to print it and wind up with something that's like 20 feet across, so yeah.

Yup... though actually the final image will be 75'3" x 17'2"

How are you printing this stuff?

Has hot-swappable ink cartridges?

I'm wondering if you HAVE to use photomerge... I'm guessing no. Why can't you keep it simple and just expand the canvas and manually place?

Probably because when you move the image it will more then likely crash the hell otu of your system!

Any updates on anyone being able to do this?

OP, i have a question for you. If you're printing this on an inkjet, i'm assuming it's a large format printer, correct? I'm thinking what your trying to achieve is a booth or panel-type output.

If so, at this size you probably won't need to print at greater than 300dpi. Anything above 100dpi will work. Although i could never get the download finished, i'm guessing your files are set at a pretty high resolution.

Memory is not an issue with Photoshop regardless of file size, that's what the scratch disk is for. Once memory is depleted, things do get slower and it will feel like PS has crashed, but it's working. I work on much larger files than this on a daily basis.

If you can upload files to an FTP site for me to take a stab at, i'll be more than happy to help. Just PM if you're interested.

Thanks.

I have a PowerEdge 6450 sitting in my house with quad xeons and 4GB of ram - I'm downloading the images now, we'll see what my old clunky Dell can do.

godaddy is telling me my bandwidth is fine, so go ahead and give it a shot
