Could you "do nothing"?

If not working didn't mean I had to literally sit around on my ass doing nothing then yes, I would consider it. I would have to do something. Also, are we unable to incur any new bills? In other words am I stuck living only with what I have at that moment and a little spending cash? No chance of advancement later in life would leave me rather unfulfilled to be honest.

I was out of work six months once and I felt like such a loser not being in the workforce. A sense of accomplishment is worth its weight in gold.

if I was rich, then yes. I would need significant amounts of cash to persue my dreams, like travelling around the world and racking up 5-6 PhD's in completely unrelated fields (you know, just to prove that I can master the humanities, hard sciences, and fine arts).

edit: but if I was just comfortable, then no. I spent winter break during my Sophomore year of college with no job. No bills to pay, and I had enough in savings that I could live off that money and have no problems. But after the second week of sleeping until 3 pm and spending all day playing video games (EQ was my drug of choice at that point), I was so bored that I wanted to die.

I haven't played EQ since that winter.

Your life is not defined by your job. When I meet new people and the first thing they ask me is; "what do you do for a living", I immediatly know this person is probably mostly boring.

Work to live, not live to work.

I think I could do it. Like a few other people mentioned, I was unemployed for 3 months in '02 and it drove me nuts, but I think this would be slightly different. A big part of my problem with unemployment was depression about not being able to find work and feeling like a failure.
I would definitely have to do other things to occupy my time though -- with my gf, I'm sure I'd be kept busy, heh. Always plenty of chores to do around the house plus *maybe* time for my own projects (of which I would possibly start if I had enough time to fully focus on them -- I know I did plenty of them in the year or two I spent between HS and working fulltime).

Your looking at this question the completely wrong way. I would do so because than I could lead a life of achievment within the life of liesure. For instance, this would provide me with the ability to achieve the level of rock climbing skill which I strive for but simply do not have the time to devote to the sport. The same could be said about mountain biking, water skiing, wake boarding, surfing, kayaking, ect... I would simply travel around and become the best at everything that I truly enjoy doing which ultimately would probably allow me to achieve a status of wealth and fame through sponsorships that I wouldn't even be seeking.

I would do it. Most Americans only work to pay the bills anyway(meaning that's all the money they make) so if the bills are already paid and you still have some money to spend on the side, then yes, I would do it.

I've done "nothing" for the last 2 years. It sucks major.. You lose motivation and ambition when you know you dont have to do anything.

I'm there already.

though i do take care of my 2 year old daughter and work around the farm. Things such as cleaning, lawn care etc.

My wife on the other hand tried staying home but she could NOT handle it. She was off for 3 months after the birth of Tricia. by the end of the 2nd month she was going nuts. She was supposed to be off for 6 months but couldn't handle it.

She would get really bored, plus she hates sitting around the house or cleaning.

Eh, kinda. I could probably do it for a year or so, pursuing Martial Arts (Aikido) to an extreme degree and learning another language. But after that is done, I would want to work again. It's something to do.
