maybe for my vacation in april/may i'll get a video camera and live on the street for a week. would be interesting but 2 days without a shower and i'm miserable. plus no ATOT. although in this little town i would most likely be arrested.

as a former homeless man, i'll give u advice. make sure u have a list of relatively safe public washroom. get a duffle bag or travel/camp bag, and at least 2 spare sets of clothing, sleeping bag, towel, spoon, knife and can opener (cheap swiss army combo thingy useful too), soap, dish washing soap, sponge, koolaid, toothbrush, and salt. use washroom to wash clothes, hair, brush teeth with salt. soap up body and just rinse with cup. u can wash top body first then crotchal area. u can beg for money to buy bread (get fortified and whole wheat if possible), sometime u can get for free if it's a bit stale with some nosing around. also, there should be soap kitchen and stuff where u can get food, or just go to a church. a good many church will provide shelter and food, even help u find job. use library for internet and job app and porn when no1 looking. eat bread and koolaid (only one cup tho, rest drink water).

most important part is keeping urself clean, ppl will not chase u away from places if u just look normal. good luck

Good advice here

missed that post originally. I saw a documentary on a homeless guy that got himself back to riches. He said the #1 part of his day was making sure he didn't smell and was clean. He described pretty much the same as above (not sure about the salt / teeth part)...he also said getting restrooms available were sometimes as simple as offering to clean them up as part of the deal...it's the one job that almost no one wants to do and often it falls on the employees.

there was a guy that was part of a friends of friends circle that was homeless once. I don't know his story other than he adamantly would not talk about it and often leave if it got brought up. It's got to be hell.

I did it once, I can do it again. But it would be short lived as I know how to pick myself up out of it.

If you can suck it up and dumpster dive, you've got it made. Also the above advice about staying clean is a must. Day labor pays well if you look like a decent person a little down on his luck. I and my friend still had couches to surf, so we usually had access to bathrooms, and washing machines. We'd get picked to help people move as we didn't look like we just rolled off the train. They'd tip well to boot.

I could handle being homeless, but I'm so OC that it would likely be short lived. I've probably washed my hands 15 times today, so you can imagine that living in filth would drive me to employment pretty quickly. However distasteful it might be. Mop boy at an adult theater, sewer treatment plant maintenance scuba diver, public school teacher, etc.

My SIL will be homeless soon. She jumps from one job to another (has had 7 in the last 2 years). My wife tries pointing her towards places to apply but she gives one excuse after another why she can't work there. It's really sad to hear a 41 year, twice divorcee, 3 cats, credit destroyed, etc. say things like "work at XYZ?!?! didn't I go to college so I don't have to work jobs like that?" while the degree she has is a 10 year old BA in Criminal Justice.

I could survive, but it would certainly suck. As other people have said, it seems that the key is to look clean, so that people are still willing to talk to you. It's pretty hard to do anything in society if people are chasing you away all the time.

You are explaining a very different style of homeless...you had a place to sleep each night and you 'day labor' was with movers...most of the time day laborers have to look like they can handle shit, get to the stop at 3am and have their own tools.

I was homeless when I was about 19. I did have a car which I slept in regularly but it leaked, so on a dry night is was best to just lie on the beach, and then you can jump in the sea for a wash in the morning too.

For all those who post about lazy liberals getting a job, I was fully employed at the time - I was a labourer on building sites. In fact I've never worked harder in my life and at the same time I have never been poorer. Fair?

OP, this is going to come from left field, but... the way I look at investing such large amounts of my life and my time during a week to my career is that I feel like my career has some sort of purpose. As in, the effort I put into it is because the work itself is helpful to society (I'm a scientist) and somehow (I'm not exactly sure how or why) this is what God wants me to do. Work isn't always fun, but if you can make it to where you find work that you value and you think is actually important, it does become worthwhile.

Note that scrubbing the dishes at a Taco Bell can still be worthwhile - you might think it's degrading and pointless, but if it allows a mother of two small children to keep her apartment, keep going to school, etc, then it's more than worthwhile to that person. Consider also that it's damn near impossible to start or raise a family without some sort of stable career. If that's ever something you think you'll be doing, well, you need a job for that.
