Could you handle being homeless?

The following story made sense in my head but it might be out of order:

My current job is a temporary gig. I'm pursuing one line of employment but it could take a while and I might end up in limbo and unemployed for an undetermined amount of time.

I was discussing the situation with my mother. I often make the joke that "Work is overrated" The thing is I half belive it when I say it. She didn't seem to think it was funny.

I still live at home and the cost of living in So. Cal is crazy. If I don't end up with a "real" job in the near future I'll be at home for at least another year or two despite the urge to leave. She really didn't like it when I jokingly said, if I have to, I can be a homeless person. I think it genuinly upset her to think that her child would ever end up living on the street.

I'm not lazy when it comes to working a job but I'm not super ambitious and I'm not 100% sure what job I want. She said I could work three jobs to make a living if I had to. I argued back that working three jobs wouldn't be living. Spending 8 hours a day at a job already seems excessive if you ask me. I can't imagine dedicating more time to working just to say I live on my own.

I'm not sure I have what it takes to be homless and survive on the streets but I encounter homeless people quite regularly working downtown and they seem to do a good job at it.

No because I'd spend all of my homeless time looking for a job and use a line of credit to pay for accommodation. I could never be living on the street and not be doing anything.. I could handle the roughing it part but what is the point

Yea I could. But I like to travel and take in history and the scenes. A lot of homeless are there cause of mental problems, abuse, etc... so they don;t have the luxury that I and others have.

I would travel north when its warm and back south when cold. Work odd jobs, meet people, etc... for me it be a adventure. Also save some cash and fly to *(insert far off land)*

No. I enjoy some of the comforts in my life too much to give them up. I already work 11-12 hour days and would work more if I had to.

That's another thing I was thinking about recently in regards to being homeless. Travel. I've seen some unsavory looking characters around the train station and I imagine quite a few homeless people find the means to travel around. Where would your cash come from?

Would you mind listing some of those comforts? I like to think it doesn't take much to make my happy when it comes to material things.

Growing up in this day an age living without technology seems scary but it's possible. I'm not sure how much I could really give up but I'd like to think I could give up a lot of it.

No way. I'm a spoiled babygirl, I'd freeze and be miserable. I'd have to shoot myself if I didn't have my daddy and my bunbun to take care of me.

ditto. Spent two years sleeping wherever I could. I had an old Taurus station wagon at the time, so I kept a bunch of blankets in the back for when I couldn't find a couch or floor to crash on.

It wasn't much fun, but I did take a few lessons away from it. Having a job, no matter how shitty it may be, is ALWAYS better than not knowing where (or when) your next meal will be.

If you're lazy/unmotivated enough that 8 hour work days seems excessive to you, I doubt you have the motivation or perseverance to survive as a homeless person. What, you think surviving on the streets is only a 5 hour a day commitment?

certainly not by choice... I'd do what I had to do, but living on the street with no ready access to safe food, running water, health care, etc sounds pretty wretched.

I can't really see a situation where it would happen, though. I mean, I'm sure I could convince a friend or family member somewhere to take me in while I get back on my feet. my sister and brother-in-law would probably do it in a heartbeat if I agreed to cook for them every night. lol.

I mean excessive in the fact that you're spending the majority of your day, week, life slaving away to pay for things you hardly have time to enjoy because hello, you're at work 8 hours a day.

Being homeless your priority would be food and shelter and not much else. I can't imagine what fun or recreation would involve (outside of being a drunk homeless person). A lot more free time.
