Couldn't find a 6600 or 6700, so...

It was more than twice of what I wanted to pay, but I had to have a Conroe. I purchased it at Microcenter. They didn't have the 6600 or the 6700, so I thought about it for a bit and got the X6800 instead. There goes all my bonus money. Oh well...

I'll post overclocking results tonight. I have a Gigabyte 965 DS3, 2GB of Patriot DDR2 800, and a Zalman CNPS9500.

Haha, it would have to be worth the performance. The question would be is it worth the price?

Impatience FTW!!!
seriously man, no self control?
you would have been better off getting an e6300/6400 till an e6600 was available and then sell the cheap one. it would have been a few more weeks till you could get it, and this way you save $$$ (and lots of it, think of the vid card(s) you could have gotten with that extra money...)

Nothing wrong with the X6800. If you got the cash, no reason not to go for it. 2.93GHz at default is very nice. As are unlocked multis

That's just a waste running it on a DS3, I just ordered one of those mainboards for my E6300.

The main reason for getting an X6800 is the unlocked multipliers, I guess. Hope you get the best out of it!

Yes, the unlocked multipliers are calling me.....

I plan on ordering one very soon...

If I had the money, I would have done the exact same thing. And bonus money is just hat, a bonus. Congrats, man. Enjoy the toy.

cmon guys stop bashing the OP like he made a mistake

congrats, OP you have purchaced the highest performing desktop chip available to the consumer.

i hope you have a blast with it, and its performance i can only imagine. i think in the end you will find it worth it.

Adam, enjoy it. I bought one the day it was out and paid $150 over list. It is fast, cool, and really amazing at what it can do. Still not sure it is an intel product.

I have everything setup now. It's running great! I have a mild overclock on it right now. It's at 300x11 with the memory at 900 with default voltages. I'll try playing with it some more when I'm not tired.

Why is it a waste? I wanted a board that has high FSB stability and I didn't need/want two PCI-E video slots. This board rocks!

I have the system now running at 3.6GHz with a 450MHz FSB and an 8x multiplier. Still at default voltage.

why are you increasing the fsb... what the hell was the point of getting an X6800 then WOW. The whole point is you are paying for an unlocked multiplier so you can play with the frequency all you want. It makes overclocking much easier, because you dont have to worry about ram, or motherboard instability. And CHRIST, a DS3? Why did you buy the highest clocking motherboard and the cpu with the highest multiplier??? I would have gotten a 975X board, which without any doubt is far better at EVERYTHING then the 965 chipset. or better i would wait for the nforce 590, so I could have the best chipset ever made + SLI (no matter how much they try nobody makes better chipsets then nvidia).

You'd raise your FSB because system performance depends on it heavily?

Just overclocking your processor won't get you nearly as good a performance boost as overclocking your processor AND FSB. Gotta move that data around you know.

Bingo! The multipliers add flexibility. I NEVER overclock just the CPU alone. There is considerably more performance when also overclocking the FSB and RAM.

I believe Adam is raising the FSB so that he can run his RAM at 1:1? Aren't Intel setups supposed to benefit from running the FSB & RAM synchronously?

You have fun, Adam. 3.6GHz Core 2 @ stock volts with a CNPS9500: That's the first step towards Nirvana! Do list your idle/load temps if you can

That's right. I thought it was obvious why I was overclocking the FSB and RAM since I've been doing it for over a decade, but I guess it's not so obvious on Anandtech. There was some instability at 3.6GHz, so I decided to drop the system down to 3.4GHz with a 425MHz bus and the RAM at 850 with default voltages. This is the way I'm going to keep it. It's passed dual Prime95 blend tests just fine for 24 hours. This is while I was doing a lot of other things.

Anyway, I ran some 3DMark tests last night. I'm not big into 3DMark as I am into real world app/game testing, but these were easy and quick to run.
