Coulter syndicator rejects plagiarism charges

NEW YORK (AP) -- The syndicator of Ann Coulter's newspaper columns rejected allegations that the controversial conservative columnist had lifted material from other sources, saying a review of the work in question turned up nothing that merited concern.

"There are only so many ways you can rewrite a fact and minimal matching text is not plagiarism," Lee Salem, editor and president of Universal Press Syndicate, said Monday in a statement.

"Universal Press Syndicate is confident in the ability of Ms. Coulter, an attorney and frequent media target, to know when to make attribution and when not to."

The New York Post and the Web sites Raw Story and the Rude Pundit have cited numerous passages in Coulter's syndicated columns and in her current book, "Godless," that appeared to resemble text from other sources. The Post relied upon a software program, iThenticate, designed to catch plagiarism.

Last week, the Crown Publishing Group, which released "Godless," also dismissed questions about Coulter's work, calling them "as trivial and meritless as they are irresponsible."

Coulter, a conservative known for her harsh rhetoric -- she labeled four 9-11 widows "harpies" who exploited their husbands' deaths -- has also written the best sellers "Treason" and "Slander." Her columns appear in more than 100 newspapers.

Nice hit piece, not once mentioning a single detail of the accused plagiarism. Did they throw that word out there for the hell of it, or will there eventually be a citing of plagiarism presented?

Why? It's an article about the response from her publisher et al to it, not about the alleged plagiarism itself.

(NOTE: RAW STORY has uncovered similiar examples from Coulter's latest book and will be reporting on them shortly)

I haven't read Coulter's tripe but I'm assuming she didn't properly cite the source of her list. It is quite true that there's only so many ways to express an idea, but when you essentially copy someone else . . . you must cite the source prominently. In fact, if it's an extensive item such as a list or a passage it should be clearly cited as an EXCERPT from X source. Coulter cannot claim that she paraphrased the Illinois Right to Life website. She copied their content and made a minor syntax change.
Illinois Right to Life

Some of the other examples of Coulter plagiarism are arguably just crappy work. She's a hack so it's not surprising she doesn't know how to write a scholarly work. She's in it for the money . . . and business ain't too bad for her.

Not surprising about AnneMan and plagiarizing. This is not the first nor the last time this unoriginal bitch has done this kind of stuff. Someone please just put her on the front line along with all the other rightwing echo chamber cowards.

So much attention I bet she loves every minute of it. I'm going to ignore all post and topics about Ann Coulter from now on.

I don't think that this is the type of attention she was hoping to get from her latest diarhea of the mouth episode.

Ann Coulter is no stranger to controversy, but her latest adventures have several newspapers questioning whether carrying her syndicated column is worth the trouble. The Shreveport (La.) Times is currently leaving the decision of whether or not to keep Coulter up to its readers. But the first newspaper to officially drop Coulter?s column since the latest uproar began seems to be The Gazette of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where she had appeared for about 14 months.

Opinion Page Editor Doug Neumann told E&P, ?Our decision was made before the plagiarism allegations. It did come after the publication of [Coulter?s] book, but I would say it didn?t directly play any role on our decision.?

However, Neumann surmised that Coulter?s incendiary book may have played an ?indirect? role in the final decision. ?I think it was the book that began to unwind support among her readers,? Neumann explained.

?Liberals have never liked her, and we?ve always gotten complaints [from them]. But the complaints that mattered the most were from the conservative readers,? who felt that their views were being misrepresented.

Good point in that article. No way conservatives want her to be the voice of their side.
