Counter-Strike and XP problems.

is anyone having problems with CS and XP? for me when CS exits it locks XP up half the time and then the other half of the time if closes fine but leaves the cstrike.exe process running and i have to use the taskmanager to end task on it. does anyone know of a fix for these problems?

The problem i have with XP and CS is i cannot leave one game then enter another. The screen goes to the load screen and i can hear
the game but not see anything!

This sux, CS is my favorite online game!

Once again I have no soloution but have exactly the same problem as the orginal poster. Does sympathy help.

Do you also have a Geforce 3 graphics card or a SB Live 5.1. Or atleast use the Nvidia drivers??

i have a geforce 2mx 400 but i use the latest nividia drivers. and i have a sblive value card. is Counter Strike the only game that locks up for you guys? nothing else has locked up for me.

So we both have nvidia graphics and a SBLive sound card. Must be one of the drivers for the two but which.

Actualy UT sometimes just blue screens in the middle of a game. Played all day last saturday (first time for years) and it bombed out three times.

when mine locks my computer up it keeps about 1/4th of the screen as a black or grey square, its in the upper left hand corner of the screen, does yours do that too?

I had constant problems with Counter-Strike in XP until I removed Zone Alarm.

Aaaaaaaahhhhh, I just started having significant problems last night with XP and CS. I have a Gainward Cardexpert GeForce 3 - 23.11 drivers, SB Live 5.1, XP of course and a huge problem.

XP was running fine with CS for two weeks. Plenty of gaming. Now when I try to get into a game I freeze up the video with the console half down and what ever sound was playing in the game at the time the console came half down in some kind of loop.

• the mouse is still functional

• video is locked up so I have to reboot

• I occasionally get a blue screen stating that the NV4_disp file is not working correctly

• replaced the NV4.dll and the NV4_disp.dll files and same problem

• replaced all video driver files with older XP drivers from 3dchipset.com - same problem

• tried to enter Return to Castle Wolfenstein - locks up immediately. Mouse works but had to reboot

• Was ready to reinstall Half life until I found the problem exists with Wolfenstein too.

Sorry, I have no ideas of how to fix this problem at this time... just wanted to share my pain and ask for some help.

hmm i didnt think to try that, i did run the ME mode and that did cause more problems. ill try the 2k mode today.

wow that definitly didnt work, i ran cs for about 2 minutes and then quit and i got a blue screen.

I get the same problems. Try to run it in 98 Mode.

if you run it in the 98/ME mode then it stills gives me the same crashing problem and if it does exit properly then it doesnt end the process. so that doesnt work either.

I tried it in 2k mode and 98 mode. Same problems.

Compatabiltity mode is more about API calls that aren't in other versions of windows. Don't think it would solve Driver bugs. Which is obviously what were suffering from.

Probably have to hang on for new Graphic drivers.

Ages ago when I first went to win 2k real player locked up every time it started until I got new SB Live drivers from Creative.

Well, I also tried to run CS in Win98 compatibility mode and it still had the same hang up. I agree that it might have something to do with the video drivers, but I was running fine for two weeks. No new software, no new drivers, and no new hardware. Why, why, why! When I installed XP, I was running W2K Pro. I chose to use the "save my settings" install. Upgrade versus clean install?!?!?! Did any of you guys just upgrade with your XP or did you chose to do a clean install?

The big question mark for me is that CS worked without a hitch for two weeks, 2 to 3 hours per night, 1024 x 768 in 32 bit mode, using voice and having just the usual freeze ups every now and then. Yesterday that all changed and now I can't even get into a game.

well I had the same problem and resolved it by the newest VIA 4&1 drivers and running the 21.83 nvida drivers !

i have a p3 so its not a via problem for me, and im running the latest nvidia drivers =(

well P3 guy its not just VIA its has to do with NVidia and there newer drivers, there drivers been sucking lately ever since they started making motherboards . Here is a LINKY

I have a p4, geforce2 mx400 and sblive. There are two things that work for me. I can play in 640x480 (yech!) or when I want to quit, i type "quit" in the console instead of going through the menu. I don't know if it will work for everyone, but it does for me.

Nope not that,I have CS on my Win98 with Nvidia and SBlive working great,on my XP rig with SB Audigy and GF2 TI it would lockup on exit only if I use OpenGL mode,D3D was fine so I selected Win98 compatiability mode and this as fixed CS for me,but Gamespy Arcade seems to not reposnd if you you go into a CS game come out and then try to go to another CS game,I`ve to reboot to get Gamespy working,which was working fine before I chose 98 compatiability mode for CS.

So I think its a software problem with XP since I know lots of people with the same problem anyway it`s only Gamespy that seems to act funny on my XP rig now.

Hey Mem, thanks. I switched from OpenGL to D3D and it is smooth sailing once again. It is funny how overlooking the little things can drive me insane. Also, I agree with Weak Superhero about never upgrading an OS. I just did it this time to see what would happen. I wan prepared to format and do a clean install. The upgrade gave me a little quality time with my wife and kids.

Just tryed the new 23.1.2 drivers. No luck seemed to work then it crashed after the fourth attempt and has gone back to crashing every other go again.
