Yesterday I heard a story that at first sounds really dumb, but maybe they can pull it off because its one of those laws that the govt doesn't enforce....
Ok, so a friend was telling that an immigrant couple (they are US citizens tho) are abusing govt assistance in the following way; the couple transferred all of their assets to their relatives who live overseas. Then, the husband filed for divorce. Both the husband and wife are around 70 years old and the husband now gets monetary federal assistance and medical assistance for free from the government as "supposedly " he is old and doesn't have a single penny after the divorce. The wife carries on with a "normal" life paying taxes, buying stuff, etc.
The truth is that he still lives with his wife and carries on a rather "normal" life as well. His wife obviously pays for all the things he needs. Now, I doubt they are the first people who have thought of this, so does the government perform random audits to make sure that people REALLY are poor? The story sounds kind of retarded as its very easy for them to get busted. The monthly govt assistance is around $900, but he drives a car, eats food, and still lives with his wife even though they are divorced. I can see the IRS knocking on their doors in a few years, but is this one of those laws that the govt doesn't enforce very strongly?
