1) The bank is at fault
2) The people taking the money and running is not illegal, but they will have to repay the bank. Simply put, it's not their $6M

From what I understand, you can live like a king for much less in Thailand. Don't know what their extradition policy is though. This happened in new Zealand so I doubt their first choice would be Mexico. Article says their rumored to be in China.

I don't know of the law, but I can't imagine you can take advantage of a 6 million dollar error from the bank. At least not in the US.. if new zealand didn't have a law on the books, they certainly would now

Most of those place you could live like a king for way less than $6 million. Sadly most of those places living like a king means getting a bigger dirt-floored hut and an extra grasshopper for dinner.

Typical dishonest Kiwis :|

...wait... bah!

Honestly it's really hard to say without being in that position, but I don't think I could bring myself to take that money. One time I stole a road cone from a construction site while drunk. The next day there was an article on the news about how much money construction companies lose from shenanigans like that, and so I returned the cone out of guilt. I'm too honest for my own good.

Edit - OMG hahaha they call Rotorua a "resort" in that article  I was born in Rotorua and spent much of my youth there. The place is a run-down shit-hole! Wow, resort? Man I'm LOL'ing IRL about that.

Edit 2 - also, I'm a Westpac customer. Hopefully they'll "screw up" with my account at some point

Typical dishonest kiwis? Arent you the one who is always bitching that others are racist/bigots/stereotypers? A little hypocritical aren't we?

He's from New Zealand, and he was clearly joking.

I'm fully aware of where hes from.

So you're aware he's a New Zealander AND you noticed the sarcastic "...wait... bah!"

I think you need some of these

I would call the bank and notify them of their error. I've done it before, though the amount was nowhere near that substantial of course. I would always be concerned about being found out/tracked down if I ran; no way I could live a peaceful life.

If I could get at least a million out of the bank in cash, or a cashiers check, I'd probably take it and retire to the Philippines with my girlfriend.. Her mom owns two houses out there in a tiny village on the beach.. I've never been but seen pics and video and it's pretty fucking awesome.. I'd be set, if not for life then at least for a long enough time to have made it worthwhile.

You could probably get a decent sized mansion/estate in Vietnam with full staff, wouldn't be bad at all. But yeah, every African country on that list would be awful not matter how much you had.

I'd go to Brazil. I've seen some errr... documentaries with natives, and I think with 6 mil it'd be a paradise.

Intresting...

1. Banks system do not care if its 10 million... usually 10 milion isnt consider a large amount. From my understanding there isnt a ... you have enter 10 million is the correct prompt... Plus once the operator key in the amount verification is done by a manager.

But its more complicated then that...
there is a Global Limit on the amount of the loan...
say you apply for a loan and the Bank gives you 10,000 as the amount

first you need to enter that in the system as the global limit of the loan

then disburse the amount of the loan that is... say a sum of 10,000....

So logicially the system has allowed a limit of 10 million instead of 10,000...

So its very unlikely that a person can get fired for entering 10 milion...he had nothing to do with the setting of the limit in the system. Plus you got manager(s) that is looking at the approval of the disbursment of funds and authorization of Limit...

I moonlight in the note department sometimes.

They didn't "steal" anything. Sure, they are liable to pay the money back, just as you or I are obligated to pay back a credit card bill or a home loan, but defaulting on that loan is not illegal. It is a civil matter. If I could pull all $6 million out, I'd just take the 7 year hit on my credit report and live plush.

It' not illegal, but there a world wide man hunt? Of course it's illegal. It's not their money.
