I'm not sure where they're getting these Judges, but I can't see how this would hold up.

Fine the guy for the cost of of repainting if necessary, but don't force him to speech he may not agree with. And no, I can't see jail or probation either.

Honestly, I'm okay with the essay. The story I read (may be the same as I didn't read your link) indicated that he was struggling to fit in and was sucked in by this crowd that on the surface accepted him. Hopefully knowledge will give him understanding. He seems lost and still young enough to help. A fine helps no one.

Now, the suggestion that he volunteer for LGBTQ groups is ridiculous.

I think essay, bill for cleanup and repairs, and fine to cover court costs would be best.

I remember having to Defend/Oppose positions in School regardless of my own opinion. This is letting them off easy and hopefully more informed.

Court compelled anger management occurs despite the fact that the participant may not agree with what is said. Same goes for court compelled 12 step programs despite the fact that Steps 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 11 and 12 all require acceptance of a singular omnipotent deity.
