My family, though not very fond of going to church, consider themselves catholic. My grandmother is very religious, not the crazy kind, but still. She handed me over a card so I could write something to my cousin who is getting her First Communion. My initial reaction was to flat out refuse it, but she insists and I take it. So here I am thinking if I should write something or not. Although my writing or not writing will likely have no impact on what my cousin's beliefs might one day be (I myself was raised catholic and got my First Communion), I just feel like I am betraying my own views and somewhat endorsing religion, which I frankly consider a plague. However, my not writing may not be taken well by her family or maybe they won't even care, idk, but my grandmother won't be pleased.

What do you think I should do?

do it for grandma. you can carry on with atheism for the rest of your days.

(i am a staunch atheist, with family and friends who have differing have different views)

I hadn't thought of the super generic phrase solution, I guess I will just write "I wish you the best" and save me a headache later.

Thanks.

People get so friggen bent out of shape about their ideologies that they can't see fucking comon sense

"What do you think I should do?"

I think you should be human. This means something to her and the family - it's not the time for you to piss on them...

This is coming from an atheist....

^^^ This. The family gesture you have been asked to perform doesn't have to endorse Catholicism or religion of any kind. It can easily be vaguely enough worded so as to acknowledge this rite of passage without contravening your passionate non-belief.

Be a fucking human being, a loving member of your family. Man up and finesse the hell out of this, emo boy.

Are you atheists so stubborn that you cannot just acknowledge an event just because you do not agree with it?

So if your cousin was joining Scientology, and invited you to the induction ceromony, or whatever, you'd be there cheering him on? And give him a 'Congratulations' card?

No, you wouldn't. But in fucked up America, Christianity is a protected species that people must 'respect'.

Don't respect cults.

Humor them. No one is requiring you to polish some scripture or cough up a tithe.

Hey cuz, good luck communin' it up! And remember what Jimmy Dugan said: Say No to the clap!

..or something.

I think some of the stubbornness from atheism stems from the overbearing nature religion has on our everyday lives.

Just write some generic nice sounding shit of course. You know, like you would do on, 99% of all the other cards you are asked to write on. And yes I'm an atheist.

uh... no?

most christians believe in evolution. and the big bang. and the formation of planets through deaths of stars...

Depends on what you mean by most. If you mean the statistical definition then you are right. More than 50% do, but not much more than, and some polls show less. Usually when people rebut something with uh...no most do, they are referring to a larger majority.

you every day life?

really?

why so serious?

Well - it depends. If he is one of those people that get all bent out of shape about people saying 'Bless you' when you sneeze or hates using cash because he is insecure/self righteous about his beliefs and the fact that is says 'In God We Trust' on the back scares/angers him then I could see it.

Could be regional as well - particularly if its in the south
