Link

Service Speed Cost per Month Self Install Kit Rebate
Fast TeleSurfer LINK 384/128 $ 21.95* $ 99 $ 99
Faster TeleSurfer PLUS 1.5/128 $ 21.95* $ 99 $ 99
Fastest TeleSoho 1.5/384 $ 69.95 $ 199 $ 199

$21.95 for 4 mths, then it goes up to regular rates.
A real improvement over the last COVAD deal posted so i think it deserves another bump.
This actually makes it a great deal coz they increased the speeds for the packages.

Cable is the way to go man. My friend just got it and he said it is 10x faster than the dsl that he has had for like 2 yrs. And the best part is, It is actually cheaper than DSL. I can't wait til Cable to come up in my area. I currently have DSL right now and I must say I like the convenience it has over dial up, but It is not really as fast as the commercials that they use to have before the telecom sector got hit hard.

Cable isn't always faster, and cable isn't always cheaper. You really can't tell someone for sure the way to go unless you have used the available services in that area, stuff varies greatly regionally.

In Columbus, Road Runner is $45 a month and Ameritech's DSL is $30

DSL - Depends on how far away you are from the CO.
Cable - Depends on how many people are sharing the same pipe as you.

It's eaiser to figure out how DSL will be for you. Just find out how far away you are from the CO. I remember when I was signing up for DSL there were a couple websites that would estimate the distance away from the CO for you.

Cable is a little tougher. As its shared, think about the area you live in. One apartment complex housing students can have the same number of residents sharing a cable line as 20 blocks in a residential neighborhood. You can probably bet that cable access in a residential area (mainly houses) is going to be faster than cable access in a college town with lots of apartments.

Of course, with either DSL or cable, best thing is to find someone close to you who has either one, and ask them or try it out at their place.

If you call Covad sales after hours, you'll hear a strange voice mail message. I know the dude's trying to sound hip and all, but he needs to work on his fake laugh. It's way off.

I am currently using covad although TelelSurfer Link is too slow to download with. Going to switch to Pac Bell Yahoo DSL... $29.95 for 6 months then 49.95 for the next six.

ATT has a better deal for cable, 6 months at $19.95 and then the regular price. I think their rate is now $45.95. But I hate ATT, always changing prices, only a $3 discount if you have your own modem, horrible customer service and a lot more downtime in the Bay Area (this is my experience from 6 months ago...dont know if it is still like that).

well, i just ordered service last week, so i should be up and running in a week or so. the LINK service doesn't require a contract so that's what i chose, the PLUS requires one year service.

reason for going DSL is simply that CABLE is not offered where i live. if i can get a steady connection i'll be happy, TGE dial-up sucks donkey ass :|

Go here and test how fast your connection is!

I have gotten as fast as 1,200 and as slow as 450 with Comcast cable. The 1,200 was at about 1:00 am when NOBODY is up. $20/month for 3 months, after that, $55 without cable tv, $40 with (+ $17 for basic cable).

Enjoy the test. I should make it my homepage as often as I check the speed.

I enjoyed my cable until my neighbors started to sign up, which slowed it down. It also started going down periodically at some point for no apparent reason, and customer service was always HORRIBLE -- inexcusably so. We eventually got totally fed up with cable and switched to DSL, which is slightly faster and 1000 times more reliable for me. Thank you Earthlink!

My Covad DSL (1.5/128) through Earthlink has been quite good so far...only 2-3 of outages over 2 years. It does hiccup occasionally when there's a thunderstorm, but that's kind of expected.

I have Covad as well and only 2 outages in a year and half but they were fixed right away. I'm not sure if cable would be more troublesome in my area.

I've got Covad, they were the only one to service me with HS internent.

I've been pretty happy with em. I got the 1.5/128k. I wish the upload was faster but all I do is surf for deals and play online games occassioinally, and it's fast enough for that. I had down time once that I know about, but it was only for an hour. Set up was pretty fast too.

BTW: If you have telesurfer plus and it was $59, you can go to the account maint, and change over to the new $49/month price. They don't switch you over automatically, but it's nice you get reduce it a bit. The catch is they want a 1 year commitment if you do it.

When it works, of course. Have been waiting since Aug 5 for Comcast to replace the underground cable to my house. I have called them five times and each time I get an apology, a credit to my account, and a promise that someone will call me to schedule the service. Hasn't happened yet so it looks like Covad will be getting a call from me.

I am still lingering around this. The Covad deal has some confusions:

For its TeleSurfer LINK, the installation charge for Self-Install is free, but Covad charges $175 if you want them to install it. Then, there is a $99 equipment cost with a rebate of $99. But the rebate form said "have TeleSurfer LINK or TeleSurfer PLUS installed by Covad" to qualify for the rebate.

That's reason I hesitated to get Covad...

If you go with one of the Covad partners (Earthlink, et al.) they often have free installation specials. I still get advertising from Earthlink even though I'm already a customer!

I have Covad (through Earthlink/Mindspring) 1.5/384. For me it's been very good. Cable may be faster in some places and slower than others. I know of a friend who has cable and it was very fast when he first got it. Then alot of people in his neighborhood got it and it slowed down. Sometimes his connection may be faster than mine, but my upload is much better than his, so I can't complain. IMHO, this is a good deal.

I have Covad through Earthlink. I pay 49.95/month (it was 19.95 for the first three, free install and equipment) for the advertised 128/1.5 service. I get 384/928. This is a killer deal, I haven't found anywhere else that offers you a 384 upload for 50 beans a month, and since I run a server this is ideal for me. The only downsides are that static IP is not included, and costs $15/month for a SINGLE IP, and also their tech support isn't very helpful.

I have Covad Telesurferlink and it is good service. I've had Roadrunner and Telocity in the past and Covad is as good or better.
