Yes, kiddies, the first dime bag is always free, but then you'll be hooked, MU-HA-HA-HA! I got in on the Covad 200/84 deal last time. It's going to be hard to go back to dial-up after my 4 months are over, but I'm steeling myself for it. Surprisingly, I find that 200 is actually adequate for my needs. Pages seem to pop with so much alacrity, I'm changing my surfing habits a little (using the tabbed browser feature less, for instance). And I can download a whole Linux distro ISO overnight. The one time I tried that with dial up it took me close to a week.

So to order, do we go to that link or go to earthlink? I agree with chuenl on the rebate thing, but I am using dialup now and would like to go to dsl w/o contract. Can any one please clear this for me? thank you

Edit: And it said on the rebate form that order must be directly from covad..

That's reason I hesitated to get Covad...

talk to the csr they will tell u its ok to do self install...i mailed my rebate 8/7 so expecting it back soon, or they will get many phone calls.

I actually posted this deal within the Yahoo/SBC DSL thread before but didn't get any response.

I have a question for those that have Covad DSL already. Do you have any problems with sticking the connection into a router and sharing the connection with multiple computers? I have not been able to do it. I had it for like 3 months already but I am thinking about cancelling it because of this problem. Do they have some type of encoding to disallow something like this? Thanks.

you need a router that works with pppoe. try netgear or 2wire

I've been trying to jump on this deal for two days and I get to the third page and then see "Our Servers are down for routine scheduled maintainence." BS!

I'd rather register online then give my info to someone and have it mistyped.

I signed up for the deal today. Got a call from Covad and had an active account within minutes. Nice thing, I get free dial up until the line is ready. Since I am switching from Verizon (no complaints, other than that they will not provide higher speeds where I live) to Covad this will be essential.

One question though: I asked the CSR about nntp servers, she didn't even know what it is, nor has she ever heard of newsgroups or usenet. Anyway, after I got my login info I checked out the news server at Covad and I hope this won't be what I will get. Covads news servers blow big time! The majority of posts are incomplete and they only carry about 29k gtoups. Coming from Verizon I am used to a completion of 99-100% and very fast propagation.

Anyone using Covad now and knows more about their newsservers? If this is really it, thank you, but no thank you Covad. I'll cancel before anything gets started.

Don't get me wrong, I think this is a hot deal, but nntp service is too important to me to give up a very reliable service just because there is something else a little cheaper out there.

You won't like their newsservers then. So far the best i've used is easynews.com. Easynews also has webbased access. But that's an extra $9.99 a month for 6 gigs. I'm using covad/earthlink and I can't stand their NG's. Typical incomplete,slow, etc. Although I heard they have gotten alot better.

For those of you who have dsl, is there any other surcharges on your bill in addition to the monthly fee? Just curious, 'cause in my telephone bill, the other surcharges/fees stands a quite portion.

what surcharges?...i control/have 3 dsl lines from 3 diff providers,...
all flat-out either 39.99, 49.99 ...etc...no other 'fees'...what does the bill say?

is the message i get when i check for availability.

dsl and cable services varies where YOU live. so dont start this age old issue again peeps.
