working 7 days a week, 12 to 16 hour days, risking your life every second of those long work days. hmmm.. doesn't sound so great when you really think about it.

Couple of weeks ago I heard some Texas or Florida hospital guy complaining traveling Nurses were charging $200 per hour.
If I were a Nurse and vaccinated FUCK YEAH I would do that.

$200 hr is still is not enough in my opinion, not for the risk invovled, the stress, etc. How many of these medical personal are going to have PSDT down the road?

$6000 a week however, if working 16 hour days 7 days a week, is only $35 an hour after you calculate OT and such, no where close to that $200 an hour.

That is a strange way of saying no one is not vulnerable to COVID.

Because NOBODY IS.

Some have severe symptoms, others have slight symptoms and others don't notice their symptoms: doesn't mean they don't have any.

I would just ignore him, he's being a pedant and targeting you for no real reason. The implication that everyone is equally susceptible to COVID-19 is silly on its face and requires no response.

Like I said above, the public-health vaccination policies in Portugal (and EU countries) are necessarily quite different from where the U.S. is now. We have plenty of vaccines everywhere, and very few people have a legitimate problem getting to a vaccine. Many experts have said that government mandates won't work well because the vaccine-resistant don't respond well to either the carrot or the stick. It looks fairly obvious to me that as other wealthy countries hit 80% vaccination rate in short order, the U.S. can only look at that target in envy and won't achieve that anytime soon, if ever.

Correct me if i'm wrong but USA's worst ever week thus far (averaged) in daily fatalities was less than 5000 per day, during that week.

Portugal's Government thought it was a good idea to open up the country JUST for Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve: the result was nothing short of catastrophic.

We had the last week of January with an average of 288 daily fatalities (in 2 of those days, we surpassed 300 fatalities). This number MAY SEEM SMALL, until you scale it to USA's population (roughly 32 times that of Portugal's) ... it's the equivalent of over 9200 deaths per day EVERY DAY of that week.

We had 30 ambulances parked outside one of the country's biggest hospitals (link in Portuguese) because there was no room inside, and the waiting time was sometimes over 8 hours, and if you think that's the worst it got, THINK AGAIN.

Portugal is on the right path NOW (and has been since our vaccination efforts ramped up) but we FVCKED IT UP quite badly too before.

Thanks for posting that. Unfortunately throwing money at burned out healthcare workers isn't going to resolve this. This is a huge concern IMO. How much longer can they keep this up and who is crazy enough to replace them.

That might help individuals but not the problem. Since you stated it as a question:

Massive hiring
Higher wages
Work life balance
Therapy - coping skills

Start there. Traveling this afternoon but there can be a lot done.

When is this going to hit all of our insurance premiums? OMG. Their stupidity will be very expensive for the rest of us

Up till recently, the costs where supposed to be reimbursed by the federal government, so up till now, there shouldn't be no effect on out premiums. Going forward that may change.

Have to ask, what was everybody doing to cause such an effect?

Understand there are states/communities here that have done next to nothing in terms of precautions. What's the death rate per capita?

Because the Government released restrictions for those days, many chose to visit relatives / old friends / have family gatherings ...

Our hospitals got overwhelmed, hence the ambulances waiting outside: IIRC, there were 46 ambulances with patients waiting outside a single hospital (our biggest) and the waiting time exceeded 10 hours for some of them ... no wonder the daily fatalities skyrocketed so much ...

As of today, Portugal has had 17895 fatalities attributed to COVID and, according to Worldometer, that's 1761 fatalities per 1M people: that's the equivalent of 562500 deaths, when roughly scaled to USA's population.

I get that part, but not understanding how it's different than what was going on here. Especially some parts that have flaunted all precautionary measures from day 1.

Hell, in Florida and Gulf Coast, your basically had spring breakers doing body shots and grinding on each other.

Edit: Actually, per capita, that's not that bad. NJ was the highest at ~350/100,000, but Florida may have passed that rate by now.

Here's some freedumb loving Texas tourists attacking a NYC restaurant hostess who asked for their
proof of vaccination to dine inside.
Carmine's Hostess Attacked After Asking Tourists for Vaccination Proof to Dine Inside

"The 22-year-old hostess asked the group of Texans to show proof of getting the COVID vaccine in order to dine in the restaurant, part of NYC's executive order that went into effect this week. Law enforcement sources said that the hostess was then repeatedly punched in the face and body, and sent to the hospital. "
