For most 4-18 year olds you just give them unlimited screen time and you'll much prefer them next/in front of you than the 300 pound dude that snores and leans into you or slams their seat back the instant the light goes off.

Also good noise cancelling headphones are $200-$300. Well worth the investment.

Doctor in Arkansas has evidently prescribed "thousands of people" the animal anti-parasitic ivermectin for COVID. Prescribed it to numerous incarcerated inmates in the county jail and apparently the sheriff there thinks it's a great idea. Doctor is under investigation by Arkansas medical board.

I guess he was absent that day in medical school when they taught the importance of evidence based medicine.

Back to square one....
So, what's the big deal with wearing masks?
Masks.... The Chinese wear masks or was it the Japanese? But we've seen them Japanese wearing masks ever since masks were invented.
And then you had Michael Jackson. Michael wore a mask quite often. Is it something to do with an undesired association to Michale Jackson that cause people to hate face masks? Or, something to do with looking Chinese or turning Japanese as in the Vapors song turning Japanese??

I continue to stress to the antiVaxxers that they wear seatbelts and that's a government law yet no one is burning their Lamborghini in protest of seatbelts. Seatbelts are a no brainer, people just use them without ever thinking. They make their kids bucket up when in the car, and the kids just do it. No politics, no protesting, no riots.

SO as far as I can tell, it's either some fear of Michael Jackson or the fear of turning Japanese.

Great thread on how/why people started taking anti-parasitic medicine to try and cure covid

- Antivaxx groups on Facebook and Reddit wanted ivermectin. Doctors wouldn’t prescribe it. Members did whack-a-mole with telehealth providers, trying to get doctors to sign off on scripts. But one reliably obliged: SpeakWithAnMD, who partners with… America’s Frontline Doctors.
- If you know America’s Frontline Doctors, it’s probably because of Dr. Stella Immanuel. She became famous because, before claiming hydroxychloroquine cures COVID, she said ovarian cysts came from sex with demons. Trump called her “very impressive.”
- So that's how we ended up here. Ivermectin fans on Facebook, complaining about wait times and high drug prices, got fed up with America’s Frontline Doctors, who sold them conspiracy and the fake cure. So they went to the feed store, to eat the horse goo, because it's cheaper.
- America’s Frontline Doctors founder Simone Gold was indicted and is awaiting trial... for her role in the Capitol Riot on January 6th. Out on personal recognizance, she was on the speaker lineup for an antivaxx rally in LA on Saturday.

Out of curiosity, what preceded point one? Why did those antivaxx groups decide they wanted Invermectin in the first place?

Also, I'm curious how someone who can come out with that "sex with demons" stuff was able to become a qualified Doctor in the first place. How does that happen? Do some acredited medical schools have low-standards, or is there something about human psychology that means one can be rational and smart in some ways while harbouring crazy delusions at the same time?

I remember buying that on 7" vinyl, and later feeling embarrassed that it was kind of racist. Certainly "orientialist" with its use of the Oriental Riff. Up there with Siouxsie and the Banshees Hong Kong Garden.

I think it was this ?
-Over the last year, as HCQ failed to become the miracle cure America’s Frontline Doctors claimed, antivaxxers became obsessed with COVID therapeutics. They're largely experimental cocktails from countries that didn’t have—but wanted—vaccine access.
Some included Ivermectin.

Antivaxx groups on Facebook and Reddit wanted ivermectin. Doctors wouldn’t prescribe it.

Not really sure how/why it was first used though, i think it just started to snowball

Probably some BS in vitro study where someone dumped a shit ton of a drug on a petri dish and saw that it killed covid. Then dumb people and charlatans jump on the bandwagon and completely paper over the issue that in vitro results frequently do not translate to in vivo results.

This is where airlines fail.
I have always said I would pay $100 extra per ticket if I could get on a plane where it was guaranteed nobody on the plane would be younger than 18.
I also would gladly pay extra to board a plane where everyone has had a recent covid test and that test is negative. Crew included.
Pretty much every single video of crazies on airplanes are over 18. I can't recall ever seeing one of a person that looked under 18.
Right, but an unruly adult can be taped to their seat until you land if need be. A screaming kid is not so easily resolved. (I'm mostly joking, btw)

True to some degree, but to me it's the infants that are the most difficult to deal with/soothe/appease/quiet. And if a baby screams through most of a flight, it's not like you can blame the baby or the parent(s), despite the frustration/irritation. I'd rather just be able to opt not to have to deal with it. I understand...I've been in that plane seat before.

See: Ben Carson.
Might not be quite so far off the deep end with the religious nonsense, but he's put forth some near-equally idiotic statements. You would expect someone who managed to go through medical school (and become an accomplished and respected surgeon in their field, etc) to have a higher degree of critical thinking and connection to reality, but there are always exceptions.

Rethuglicons are good at 1) finding these outlier whacknut scientists, and 2) drawing them in

You know what else kills Covid in a petri dish? Napalm. Nuclear explosions. And throwing the petri dish into the heart of the sun. All kill Covid. If only it wasn't for that tiny, insignficant detail that you mention of it not necessarily translating into viable treatments in humans.

It also needs to be noted that nearly all of the major Fox News talking heads have since mentioned Ivermectin as a treatment.

Heck, there's a another forum site I lurk in that has a physicist who can do 4 dimensional math, who was pushing both hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin a year ago. Absolute dunning kruger run rampant.

There actually are some large ongoing studies to see if ivermectin will prove to be effective. The linked article states that, by the end of this year, be about 33,000 people will have participated in some kind of ivermectin trials. Looks like there will be many times that amount in amateur trials. https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-02081-w

Amateur trials? The only data that really matters is a large enough double blinded controlled trial. Anything else is largely going to be garbage with confounding factors that make it difficult to interpret.

I would note that a lot of the studies many people set up for covid treatments were poorly designed. The FDA noted earlier in the year that around 90% were not even statistically powered to answer their primary research question (ie, not enrolling enough people to detect a real signal).

I saw this over on the COVIDIOTS subreddit and figured y'all would get a kick out of it.

This had me look up the FLCCC, started by this king Covidiot. Seems to be the source of most of the Ivermectin craze:

He's "resigned" from two job since he started peddling this snake oil. They should come for medical license next.

So what? There's only one real solution, which is for nearly everybody to be vaxxed. The rest of it is just bullshitting away from the truth.
