Covidiots upset that Whitehouse is telling them what's next because they didn't get vaccinated

"But my kids can't get the vaccine because they're newborns/too young"
A)No shit, and that's exactly why you should.
B)your young children aren't willingly refusing the vaccine

Covidiots are gonna covidiot
It would appear that the 'fuck your feelings' crowd has once again had their feelings hurt.

I read XKCD every day. Today's reminded me of this thread:

Funny too, in that a number of the research papers coming out on omicron are showing it's resistance to neutralizing antibodies induced by previous infection to other variants (inc Delta.)

Ie. Went through all that trouble to be infected, survived, and it won't do much for you against Omicron.

Even a 2 dose course isn't very effective. A booster is really required.

Hopefully it really does continue to present with milder symptoms or millions will be screwed.

Oh man. I'm literally tearing up. Do you know how depressing that is? This is a medical professional who cares. He was pushed past the breaking point. He was pushed to the point of saying screw this shit, I'm done trying to save people.

This is why I'm fucking done. I'm fucking done caring about shit-head anti-vaxxers. I'm done. Fuck them. They can fucking die. In fact, please die faster so we don't heave to deal with you any longer. Please die faster so the medical professionals can get a breather. The same medical professionals who risked their lives every day during the pandemic.

Thing with the vaccines is they drop efficiency off a cliff after ~3 months .. in related news we've heard that they're already working on omicron specific versions and they're gonna need 3 months to make em.

So get the booster now and in 3 months get the omicron edition -> home free.

The current boosters work quite well. Not sure an omicron specific booster will be of much use. Between development, presentation of data and FDA EUA authorization, it will be months away.

People need to get boosted now if they are eligible. Omicron is here and spreading like wildfire. We'll see huge case numbers in Jan.

I think there is good reason to think survivability will be high, but sheer numbers of infections will play hell.

We've had annual influenza vaccines for a decade now based on seasonal variant. So I'm not sure why these anti-vaxxers are freaking out about multiple shots in a highly fluid situation where the virus continues to mutate. Fortunately, current vaccines seem to help, but yes, it appears you need a recent one.

Nobody is saying that vaxxing will eliminate COVID. It's probably here to stay. But the ideal situation would be to get it to a point where an annual flu shot would likely cover it and keep a lid on surges. But we've been playing from behind since day 1. Don't people want this to end?

Ironically, the very mitigation efforts being resisted are what is perpetuating this. And for the folks that just want to go about life as if nothing is wrong, enjoy the massive surges that will literally topple the healthcare system.

Honest question - has there been any good suggestion from the right on how to deal with ANYTHING in the past 30-40 years? Other than "GoVeRmeNT sHoULd LeAvE pEoPLe aLoNE."

For crying out loud, we have enough problems that it would help if the other half tried to contribute every once in awhile with a novel idea or two.

Just in time for the Sigma Variant.

They don't even have to contribute any ideas. They are clearly incapable of that. All they really need to do is get the fuck out of the way while the rest of us go about fixing the shit they broke. Instead they want to throw tantrums and break more shit.

Here is my worry. We are quickly approaching a breaking point. This virus is going to keep mutating, and eventually one of those mutations will hit that perfect combination of long incubation period, high transmissibility, and high fatality and we will not be ready for that.

Our healthcare system is already hovering at the breaking point, and what sudden surges haven't done so far attrition will eventually accomplish.

Because the healthcare system is so overloaded they are not training new nurses or doctors. Neither of the training hospitals in Dallas is willing to take on students, so they are unable to complete their training and get licensed. We are not getting new healthcare workers.
Because the healthcare system is so overloaded we are losing experiences nurses and doctors to burnout and fatigue. I have 4 nurses and 1 doctor in my close family. All of them are working 60-70 hours weeks, nonstop, with a few 80-90 hour weeks when things get really bad. None of them are able to take vacations or time off. They are all on call 24/7 because even a single nurse calling in sick on a floor is a minor disaster, people literally die due to it. All of them have been bedside care for 15+ years, and all of them are now looking to get out of patient care. One of them already has.

I don't think people really understand how bad things are. How close we are to the healthcare system collapsing.

I started reading u/thanosrain posts and man is that depressing. Came across this thread https://www.reddit.com/r/nursing/comments/rev7nl/how_do_you_guys_deal_with_going_out_in_public/ in the nursing subreddit and so many replies saying the likes of "It used to bother me until I finally became dead inside", "I stopped caring I’m vaccinated wear my mask not my problem anymore. ", or "I just quit caring. You don’t want to get vaccinated? Fuck around and find out! Don’t want to wear a mask? FAAFO. Not my problem."

Poked around r/conservative yesterday too because I wanted to hear their take on Biden's address. As usual, deplorables stayed deplorables. On the bright side there are many people over there now openly saying they've had their shot even if they're still anti-mandate. There was a time not too long ago when even admitting getting a shot was met with near universal condemnation. Nevertheless, a lone post I've seen from a nurse on r/conservative saying how bad it is, how many deaths they're seeing, and asking not to spread misinformation was still downvoted.

On the eastern side of the Cascades, yes.
My bad. There are some exceptions (Ferndale). Almost on the Canadian border on the sound side. What a contrast to Bellingham which is where Western Washington State U is located. (same county)

I'm worried about here in Ontario. We already have an underfunded and overloaded health care system and now we have a premier who wants to privatize. 2 years ago he essentially froze nurse's and other health care workers' wages, capping them at 1% per year. So basically take an already overworked work force and fuck them over even more so they all quit. Then in a few years when we're all waiting years for operations or 10 hours in emergency he can say public healthcare can't keep up and his buddies roll in and privatize.

Haven't seen it mentioned here but the US Army has been working on a "Covid-19 vaccine designed to protect against current and future variants—and even other coronaviruses— and are expected to announce positive early results within weeks"
https://www.forbes.com/sites/alison...nst-all-coronavirus-variants/?sh=62bcd7f72eec

It would be nice if we could get one vaccine that actually works for more than a few weeks.

Yeah..
We'll see what magic formula they think they have.

Tricky thing with covid vaccines, monoclonal antibody treatments, and even natural neutralizing Abs is that they are targeting the exposed surface protein (spike) which is also under heavy evolutionary selection pressure.

Ie. It's a constantly moving target.

There are boundaries of tolerable change without breaking functionally, but nobody can know all the possible paths it can take.

Imo, best outcome for this is that we get a variant that with low lethality, and thus becomes a problem we don't worry to much about anymore. Vaccination alone won't end this.
