I asked A coworker to do something and he played the Slave Card. None the less I decided to do the task myself w/out his help. I am not necessarily over him, but I asked him to do a task to support the mission but he played the damn slave card. He said I am not your slave. And I got pissed. What gives? Slavery has been over for over 100 years and I know he is well compensated. What should I do?

Talk to him in great detail over the course of the next month or so about the slave era and its consequences on society and the African-Amercans who gravely suffered.

Was it just the one comment because that's a common phrase...might not be racially inclined.

Interesting...hit the reply button reflexively and it posted a blank message. Now I have to actually write something.

"I'm not your slave" doesn't sound like playing the race card. "Yessa masta! Yeah right, go f*ck yourself, I'm not your slave" sounds more like playing the race card to me.

did you tell him you were asking him if he could do it and not ordering him to do it?

Those of Slavic origin were slave a lot longer before the blacks of Africa were.
That's where the word slave comes from. "Slav".

Being part Polish and Ukrainian I can play the slave card if I want. I'd need to go back 1,000 years though.

tell him how your people were brutally enslaved by other groups of barbarians back when europe was wild.

other than that you both seem overly sensitive.

I had an employee say something like that to me once. I asked him to do something and he said "what am I? your slave?". I answered with "no, you're my bitch_".

Would you be posting this thread if he was white?

"I am not your slave" isn't always racial.

so selfish of a worker. Employees should work for their company's success. So they should cooperate, work as a team, and do everything they can to make the company profitible. Sucks... seems like wages and salaries keep our workforce lazy and only care about themselves, and managers never tell their employees what the company's ultimate true goal is. They just go "do this and that." And employees will do it w/o questioning as to what it will be ultimately be for.

ah well.

Are you sure he wasn't joking around with you? People do that, you know.

You must either be young, or japanese... Or maybe you're just being sarcastic.

I was asking him to do the task and he blew up. I do anything at all costs to get a mission done whether that's asking him for help or not. I guess when you spend more time at work than with your family arguments will occur. I was an example by not firing back and I think he was suprised. I just quietly finished what we were working on together and then I got the task done that he refused to do. After that came the conversation where we both expressed our views. He was out of line but I forgive him and he forgives me for anything I may have done in the past or present. So it's all good we can work in peace again.

Cliffs:

I ranted; me and the co-worker forgave each other and we will continue to get our overall goals at work accomplished. We are at peace and will continue to be a good team.

Then why post the whine on ATOT? I sure he is glad you 'forgave' him and weren't too pompous.

Screw that. Get him fired or fire him. Report him or do whatever you have to do.

The term is insubordination and it is a terminable offense. Make that SOB learn that there are consequences to his actions and words. He can't keep using race as a crutch.

Tell him that if it weren't for the white man enslaving blacks hundreds of years ago, he wouldn't be here enjoying the luxuries that he has. He'd be selling goats in some remote African village instead.
