Cox 150 MBPS - Modem and Router question

I had Cox 50 MBPS connected to Arris SB 6121 modem and Linksys E4200 router. Mine is a 2 story home. Was getting 50-60 mbps on both the floors.

Now Cox bumped my speed to 150 MBPS. But I get only 100 upstairs and downstairs. I have not tested by connecting the modem directly to laptop and tested the speed.

Will I get close to 150 mbps if I change the modem or router or both modem and router?

If yes, any recommendations are appreciated.

Thanks

100M is good. I would not replace your equipment. Are you hard wired or is this wireless? And yes, I would hook the modem directly to the laptop for troubleshooting purposes.

Some quick research shows that you are most likely maxing out the capacity of that modem. There are theoretical speeds and then there are real-world speeds.

Agree on checking speeds wired direct to modem. That should tell a tale.

You may not need to know this but others might, you'll want to power down that modem before hard-wiring into it. It will retain the MAC of the router otherwise and may not give you a connection. I know on Comcast it's best to power it down for a few minutes. No idea on Cox.

I'm getting 118M on my 6121, but I'm paying for 100M. My friend is getting 200+M on his 6121, but he's got a 200M line. I don't buy it that this modem can't do better. It's most likely an ISP or router issue. Not to mention that they don't guarantee you that speed. It's up to...

Always test with a direct connection, it saves a lot of time in the troubleshooting process. The shotgun method can get expensive.

Update with testing:

Upstairs room - has the modem and router - hardwired to laptop - download speed 125-130 mbps and upload 25-30 mbps

Upstairs room and downstairs room - wifi - downlaod speed: 75-80 mbps and upload 15 mbps. I have the Nexus android box connected to TV downstairs for Kodi and Netflix. How to optimize the speed as I get buffering in KODI sometimes?

Please advice.

Thanks

I have a 6121 as well, and peak at around 130Mbit. Though my provider (Comcast) is providing 150Mbit if I have a cable modem that supports it, I just couldn't justify replacing a perfectly serviceable (and paid-for) modem for a 15% speed boost, since I so rarely max it out anyway. If it dies, or if another speed bump is offered for what I'm paying, then I'll get one that supports more streams (higher speed). For now, it's close enough for me.

As for the wifi, I'll have to let someone else advise. I ran ethernet to my living room to solve the speed problem.

Yup. I have 7 devices hard wired with CAT6. Can't stand buffering when it comes to video. You could upgrade to wireless ac, but I think the issue here isn't bandwidth. It's the nature of wireless.

If the nexus box is anything like the RPi, Wi-Fi is terrible on it. I use power line networking for my RPi. 80Mbps is pretty good for Wi-Fi through put.

What do you recommend to set the value for channel in 2.4 and 5 Hz?

Auto in both or any specific value for 2.4 and 5?
