Cox or FiOS? - DC area

My FiOS contract is up, and although the service is good, I hate the fact that you're stuck with their router. So I'm thinking of switching to Cox.
The FiOS Quantum router is mediocre at best and not compatible with MESH networking. I can't access the ONT to change routers so can't go there.... Is Cox more flexible since you have to have a cable modem first, then a router option? How do people like the Cox wifi spots?

Unless you're in an MDU,using VDSL for premises deployment, then you should just be able to request your ONT switched to ethernet, plug in an ethernet cord, and use your own router.

Verizon installs with Ethernet now, you can use whatever router you want, consumer, prosumer, enterprise, or custom box running PFsense. The only thing they wont do is give technical support past the ONT if you're not using their router.

If you have set top boxes you'll need to reintroduce internet over the Coax for your Video on demand and guide information so you'll need to buy a MoCA adapter, or you can keep the provided router (G1100) and use it after your primary router but only for it's MoCA bridge to provide internet to your set top boxes.


With Verizon's 1gbps service available in the DC area now, I see no reason to switch, Verizon has the most robust network, and because of their size they tend to have favorable peering across the country.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I should have been a little more specific on my situation. I've had FiOS for about 8 years now and have had issues with both wired and wireless networking. My ONT is outside through several finished walls and a concrete foundation, so I don't have access to the ethernet cable to connect to a new router. I use TiVO over the network for my TV, so don't need the Coax.

If you log into your FiOS account online and go to the "Shop" tab, there should be a tab for moving, click that.

Then enter your CURRENT address, and say the current resident is moving out and you're moving in. You can set the new install date as the same day you say the "other" family is moving out.

This should allow you access to new customer pricing, as well as allowing you a free $90 installation, which includes running ethernet (instead of Coax). Verizon does NOT use coax installs anymore and any new installation WILL be installed with Ethernet. They can usually just go through the wall where the Coax currently goes, though I've also seen them drill new holes.

If your area has 1gbps available, this will also allow you to upgrade to this for a low price. (it's $70 a month here).

I haven't done this trick myself, but slick deals and DSLreports forums have both had people reporting success, so i'd give it a shot.

So you already have Ethernet to the router?

You need to upgrade to the gigabit package. Verizon will run Ethernet for you then.
