Hi all,
My cp is sitting at 50-80% usage rate just sitting there.
I have used Wintop and others to pinpoint where the usage cycles are going but to avail,
I Have just finished reloading Win Me,Still same thing,System monitor reports this aswell as another program i have, but programs like wintop say its 98.77% idle...Which I think is the wrong reading,i am in belief that the system monitor is actually right here...
Also have reset all bios to defaults and still heavy usage, could this be the RY bios??
Secondly, dan some of you others tell me what your cp usage is at with your KA7+Athlon??(Bios Used?)
I Need A hand here,or a ra Number for another chip lol

This may be too simplistic, but try pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL once only (this is what works in Win 98) to see what all is running in the background. Then start closing things and watch the resource meter. I sometimes will close some of the items in my sys tray to free up some resources - I know there are programs to manage the tray too. This is one reason to not install a lot of incidental apps & utilities. Look in the Windows StartUP directory to see what you really don't need there also. I think Compaq had a problem like this a while back with some of their systems - they at first blaimed Windows, but it was really their doing - putting too many 'helpful' utilities on the machines without enough RAM, I believe, and bogging them down.

I'd bet with all that RAM you have that maybe the meter is wrong.

P.S.
By 'closing things' above I meant simply to click 'end task' on the Close Program dialogue box.

i WISH,
I use wintop an end it all,
both are better at finding hidding tasks an shutting them down,
and shy of shuttin off the kernel,
none of these help my prob,
and as i said already, even a fresh install aswell,
So NO apps or extras at all installed.
There is no other apps running,
i am of belief its the beta bios (RY)
or a conflict between Me and Via And Amd.......
this is why im here asking for feedback on others cp usage with settup like mine, which its states down below....
tks for help so far tho

I'm sorry my earlier reply was not more helpful, but I was working from my memory of something I had read casually a while back and never used. I've virtually never run out of system resources, and I have only 64 MB of RAM and often run 3-6 apps at once with a lot of stuff in the system tray - althoug the PC may run a bit slower like that!

What I was trying to recall, and subsequently tracked down, was an article titled "Managing Your System Resources" by Neil J. Rubenking in the Desktop Solutions section of the October 19, 1999, issue of PC Magazine.

This article may not be available on-line (at least I couldn't find it), and says nothing about the BIOS as a source of system resource problems, but it can be inferred from the article that different resource monitoring programs may calculate usage differently - hence the conflicting %'s you're seeing. This suggests to me that Wintop is right and you have no problem.

In Win 98SE I've used 'msconfig.exe | startup tab' and 'control panel | add/remove programs' to eliminate unwanted programs. Even in a new installation there are quite a few things running in the background. You are definitely correct to try and fix the problem (if there is one) now, before you add more programs and utilities - especially the 16-bit programs the article mentions - and further complicate the situation.
Good Luck.

Very Informative reply and tks largley,
I am most concerned as i am not sure as to,
A:if it actually right, will it shorten cp life..
B:if it Actually right,is it an option of fast writes or other from bios(Like fast find, but for cp's reg duty?)
C:if it's wrong,why does it report 100% the sec i turn on RC5 or S@H?
(as a friend suggested here tho,it maybe registering that wrong too,but i think it warrants serios attention till its figured as to,harmfull or not)

Tks for assistance all

seen someone else say, that it was a unnessecary program,

Mickster- I believe that msgsrv32.exe is a integral system file in the Win9X shell. I would not try to remove it. What Via drivers are you using? If you are using the most recent 4.23 4in1's, I had extensive problems with that version causing system conflicts. I re-installed and used the AGP 4.03, IRQ routing driver, and the INF driver from the 4.22 version only, and it it solved everything. Also, I just installed a copy of Nuts & Bolts98 and it has a program called Winguage Pro. I get the same result with that program as I do with Microsofts system monitor. It says I am at 50% with nothing but explorer and systray running in the background, and as soon as I start moving my mouse it drops to 0% until I stop. I agree with what Ulysses said about it not giving a correct reading with more than 128mb of memory. I may be wrong but I believe that the Win9x shell can't really use over 128mb effectively as it was not really designed for systems with that much. I think that in the early development on Windows, they figured if anyone was using over 128mb it would be a NT system or something... That N&B program also has another program called "Discover Pro" that says I have a 466mhz K6-2 or a Cyrix...

right on tks for info my friend
And yes,i seen same result with hand off mouse, and hand on
your absolutely right.
But.....
Muhahahahahahahahahahaha
I got it,
And sorry to say,
any and all users of Me are having the same thing go on behind thier backs,
It resides in Help Center,(Cp Usage)
Although i do not no how to disable its support for help assistance at this time,i am relieved to find its an actual byproduct of windows resource consumption habit. And Not,an Amd/Via issue
And for refrence,i have installed me(4.90-3000.2)on several box's,
Intell & Amd,And using system monitor, set to monitor kernel usage at a refresh of a min of 1 sec,
Results were same across all rig's,
when hand off mouse,cp usage will idle at 50-52%
of course,i have tried to turn all 32 & 16 appz till near its death knell, and same results.
So in conclusion,i am thankfull for any that looked into it,
figures its windows anyways,
Gratefull its not an inherent design flaw of hardware
my two cycles
(minus 52% idle cycles)

Have a similar prob with dual p111 500, running w2k seems to be inordinate amount of cpu usage shown even when idle, i built the system primarily to run falcon 4 and its a lot slower than 98, i have downloaded and tried smp seesaw, tried to shut down as much as i can from taskmaster but it keeps warning me it will deflower my daugter, sell my house from under me and generaly make my life a misery if i delete them, seems to be about 18 background tasks running and i am not familiar enough with 2k to risk deletions anybody got any advice on this..thank you tony d

Hi Guys...

I had the same problem with my Celery 366@566. I managed to track this down to the ACPI function in the bios... Once I had disabled that, the CPU usage went back to ~2-5% under a full Win98SE installation. Could be that my motherboard (Abit ZM6) wasn't entirely ACPI compliant. Following a BIOs upgrade, I tried ACPI again, and the problem disappeared.

Hope this is of help
