CPU Comparison: Desktop vs. Mobile

I'm up for a new computer @ work and have to decide between a desktop/laptop. I don't travel, so portability is not an issue for me. Budget is not a factor, however I am limited to just a few models and very few upgrade options.

My main applications are Photoshop, Adobe Captivate/Premiere and some flash a/v encoding.

The max I can order on either machine is 3GB RAM, so really the main differentiator I can control is the CPU models.

The choices are:

Desktop: Core 2 Duo E6300 (IT told me they are going to upgrade the line soon, but not sure to what CPU (M57 Lenovo model)

Laptop: Core 2 Duo T2400 1.8GZ
or Core Duo T7700 2.4 GHZ (although this one is 1k more than the T2400 due to double ram, DVD burner and upgraded screen).

Any thoughts/suggestions? Thanks!

If mobility isn't a concern, go with the deskop. You can use a more comfy keyboard, enjoy a larger screen and you have a perfect excuse NOT to take work home with you.

Besides, desktops are generally cheaper than comparable laptops so you'd be doing your company a small favor by choosing the cheaper of the two options.

I'd rather own my own laptop, anyway. It eliminates the need to get approval from IT for 3rd party software and you can always transfer work from the laptop to the desktop with a USB key if IT refuses to let you on their network with a personal machine (likely).

The Apps you mention will perform far better with a multiple disk drive system, eithr Raid of simply running separate disks for Scratch drives for the apps themselves, and leave the OS separately.

Running PS on a single drive system is a huge bottleneck

Unfortunately can't implement a RAID solution - don't even know if they'll let me have 2 drives, but I'll ask about that..
