I know one is for a desktop and one is for a laptop, but I'm thinking of switching over to laptop from my desktop, and I need your opinion.

My DT has this CPU:
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz
Other DT specs:
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800
EVGA GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3

The LT I want (X6-9500) has this CPU:
2nd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2630QM (2 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 2.9 GHz
Other LT specs:
NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M 2GB
GB (4GBx1) DDR3-1333 SODIMM Memory

How much of a performance hit should I expect with this? I plan on gaming on it. In all honesty, besides the lower CPU frequency, it seems like it'll run better than my current desktop, and the new architecture and it being quad core might actually help push this CPU to being close to the same?

What is the price on that? Sager and cyberpowerpc have much better deals on the new I7 laptops then HP or dell.

I can get it with EPP for $986 after tax and free shipping. On that note, any comment about my actual question? lol

Oh, yeah sorry, you will see a small gain in Graphics performance. You will also see a small decrease in some tasks but over all faster CPU as well. Turbo boost really takes away your old CPU's advantage.

I'd also be losing out on 2GB of ram and about double the HDD space. That extra 1GB of GPU power is tempting though. Don't know much about the brand though.

Must programs wont use more then 4gb, and you can get 500Gb for +$18 and if you are using more then 500Gb in a laptop you should get a desktop.

I would get the laptop. The 2630QM is a much better CPU - double core count, hyperthreading, Turbo. The only thing about the 8400 is that it's very overclockable.

Doubt it. As far as I can see, the 6570M is basically a 5570 - same number of shaders, same clocks, same bus width. And the 5570 is a no-show against the 9800GT.

I just saw that you can REMOVE the OS included to take like $85 off. We might have a winner here with the X6...

Now to see about the free shipping...

Coupon code "myspace" took off another $30. I'm at $844 for this thing!

If you dont need it now you can use the code no rush and choose no rush delivery you get an extra 5% off (50 bucks on a 1k laptop)
also if you pick the higher end notebook you can lower the CPU, RAM, OS, and other added stuff to get you to the lower price and have the GTX460M (really good video card)

How does the GTX460M 1.5GB compare to the GTS540M 2GB?

I'd have to get up to 1K in price to get $50 which would bring it to $950 - I'm happer at my $850 price point

Edit: Can't really lower anything on the 9300 that has the GTX460 in it.

I can lower the 9400 to 1120 with the coupon, Grand Total: $1,064.00

I think I'll stick with the $9500 and the GTS540 2GB; will need to look at reviews of the GTS540 first. $844 is hard to beat, and it seems to offer pretty good performance - now I just need to see what kind of shipping I'm looking at.

Can you tell if it allows a SSD alongside the HDD anywhere?

Yea if you arent worried about EXTREME graphics on a laptop the 540 should be fine

The poll is probably too simple to make sense of the real situation.

There is a better chance that AMD becomes sold than it designing ARM ICs themselves. By that I don't really any scarcasm: there is some realistic chance that they will produce an ARM ISA design some time in the future; but there is a significantly better chance that they will cease to exist as an independent company.

AMD is one of the most IP rich companies anywhere in IT, but the company in itself is not set up to compete with ARM design houses that have been working on such platforms for 5-10 years. We could look back at CES 2011 as one of the tectonic shifts in semiconductor industry, with Windows ecosystem capitulating to a low powered ISA, and clear future direction of the industry in mobile, thin clients, and heavily virtualized cloud servers. None of these really requires a high performance CISC architecture like x86, or any of the backward compatibility benefits that it brings.

It's quite ironic that Intel and AMD each sold their mobile units related to ARM (xscale, xillion, imagion) to pursue Silverthorn and Bobcat. And by the looks of it, in the eyes of most in the industry, after this CES, their bets will prove to be on the losing end in a few years. And think back of what people thought about Tegra's importance as part of NV's future just 1 year ago; whether one is NV supporter or not, very few thought it would be a viable mainstay to replace their lost business (chipset) and shrinking advantage (discrete graphics), but today it is exactly regarded as that.

AMD can be a very good asset for someone in the industry to use their IP portfolio and their experienced teams in designing high performance superscalar OoO MPUs, as well as in throughput-oriented SPMD processors. But there is a very small chance that it can compete alone by starting anew a design on a low powered general purpose ISA like ARM.

Wrong thread methinks
