CPU dead?

A few months ago my computer randomly died. Would make it to post around 1/10 times. Would lock up in windows shortly after. The setup was:

Opteron 165 @ 2.2ghz
2x512mb of mushkin pc3200
gigabyte k8ns-c
x800xl agp
antec 420 watt psu
lite on dvd rw drive
2 ide hard drives
xfi sound card

I had a spare dell 4600 laying around, so I was able to test everything except the cpu/mobo in a spare computer. Ram, vid card, hd's, etc all worked fine in the dell. Bought an antec 500 watt psu, still didn't make it past post.

Since the onboard lan and a few other things had recently died on the k8ns-c, I figured that the motherboard was dead. Too busy with school to wrench on the computer, so I just used the dell for this semester.

I ordered an asrock 939 dual sataII, so that I could upgrade to pci-e in the future. The machine posted a few times while I was setting up my raid, but after rebooting it will no longer post. Clearing the cmos will not get me to post. I've tried 3 different sticks of ram, in all the different dimms. Two different video cards. Different hard drives. Every component (except for mobo/cpu) works in the dell. Both PSU's work in friend's machines and my dell.

Time for a new cpu?

Did you ever flash the bios?
Problem there could be a bad flash, in which case, you would need to get a new bios chip from the mfr., if it is the socketed type.

Also, it could be the board. Take the CPU to someone who can put it into a different board and see if it posts with it. If so, then your motherboard is probably the problem.

You also didn't get any conductive thermal past anywhere it's not supposed to be, did you?

I never flashed the bios, I'm going to see if asrock will mail me the most current bios chip.

I've gotten pretty good at this thermal paste thing, although I suppose it's a possiblity. I'll check for that.

Time to find a buddy with a socket 939 system to check my cpu...

Why blame the cpu? Could be mobo, ps, memory, hd.

Well.... tried two different psu's, memtest, and many different hard drives. ALL components except cpu and mobo have been tested in another machine. The cpu won't work in the k8nsc or the asrock dual.
