I just bought a new desk for my computer. When using my old desk the computer case was under the top of the desk so i could not see inside. When using my new desk the computer case is over the top of the desk so i can see inside since i have a clear case. So i installed the new desk and started my computer. After a couple of minutes i was surprised to see that my CPU fan is not working when the computer is idle.
My case is an Antec Lanboy with two 120 mm fan (one front and one back).
My PSU i an Enermax Liberty 620W.
My mainboard is a DFI Lanparty n-Force 4 Ultra-D.
My CPU is an Opteron 180 and the fan is an Artic Cooling Freezer 64 pro with PWM.
I did some test. When i enter the bios the fan is fully working as it should be and the temp of the CPU is around 28-30 celsius. When i play games, convert video to DivX or watch HD movies the fan start and keep the CPU at around 35-40 celsius (using motherboard monitor). When the cpu is idle the fan doesn't work and the cpu temp reported by my mb is around 33 celsius.
I did not shut down my computer for 3 days and played WoW for around 6 hours this weekend without any problem. So obviously the Freezer 64 keep the CPU to a workable temp. But i'm still surprised that when the CPU is idle (surfing the net for exemple which is almost idle for an Opteron 180) the heat dissipator of the Freezer 64 alone can keep the CPU temp at 33 celsius. It seems unbelievable to me. Is it normal ?
I'm affraid that maybe my mb doesn't report the currect temp. My mb as a feature to shutdown cpu fan below 35 celsius and to fully start the fan at over 50 celsius. Between those temp the mb adjust the fan speed speed automatically to try to keep the temp under 50 celsius. In fact between those temp the mb seems to start and stop the fan repeatedly (from what i can see) maybe because it doesn't suport PWM fans (i can't connect the PWM pin of the Freezer to the mb). Should i lower those max and min temps in the bios to make the cpu fan always turn just i case my mb doesn't report the correct temp or it is perfectly normal for a heat dissipator alone to be able to keep the cpu temp at 33 celsius when idle ?
