I recently bought a 4k monitor and 290x to upgrade my desktop(built 2011) I have a 2500k in it and I hadn't overclocked it(sacrilegious I know). I can't play good 4k video(youtube plays ok) without maxing out the CPU and dropping frames. I OCed to 4.9Ghz and while the drops are very small now they are still there. What CPU would give me zero drops on a 4k video?

I am using the Big Buck Bunny video to test(http://www.libde265.org/hevc-bitstreams/bbb-3840x2160-cfg02.mkv). I have tried VLC(video unwatchable drops) and MPC-HC(barely noticeable drops).

I'd recommend a cheap video card. GTX 750 should certainly handle it.

Edit: I missed the 290x. You must have a configuration problem.

I'd try Potplayer. It's a great free video player that is portable (doesn't require installation).

if this is an HEVC demo video you should buy a GTX 950 not a 750 I think.
as for CPU only, I guess a 5820K and some OC?

Even a GTX 950 gives problems due the old MoBo (also, the card is not that powerful to handle it)... but to being sincere only Broadwell and a GTX 970 /R9 380X card and above can play perfectly 4K without problems.

Wow, you want 4K HEVC @60FPS! There might be standalone players that do that by the end of the year. Like SPBHM says, a GTX 950 or 960 will do that.

That led me to this thread, which led me to "LAV Filters" for hybrid decoding. That might fix your existing setup - looks like AMD hybrid decoding was enabled just last month.

I didn't think 4k HEVC @60FPS was that big a deal. I guess if I look back I remember having to install a mpeg2 card to get smooth DVD playback on one of my computers.

I guess since content is mostly non existent so I won't worry about it, I can game fine at 4k for the games I play.

Netflix 4K is all HEVC.

Anyhow, this is why I'm waiting for Kaby Lake before I buy a new laptop and desktop. It includes a hardware decoder for 10-bit HEVC.

A GTX 950 and 960 will do 4k HEVC @ 60 fps. I use MPC-HC for my video.

For some reason though, I find using CUVID, while doesn't lean on the hardware decoder and uses more power, gives me visibly improved video quality in my anime.

How about not buying anything and using Strongene's H265 decoder? It has outstanding performance and it uses your GPU compute units(if confgured properly),and even on non-opencl implementation it still uses bew new instruction sets which improve performance over other decoders.

One of those strange things that x86 needs x100 more power than ARM to match the experience. (OK, I exaggerated a little)
