I have an ASRock AB350M with a Ryzen 1200. I was wondering what the best CPU (bang for the buck) I could drop in it (basic OC'ing is fine)
It would have to be worth it to replace a i5-6600K running at base 3.9Ghz
not sure if anything fits the bill? I haven't really plaid attention (or know much about) CPUs anymore
Thanks for any insight you can provide.

Taking a look at the official CPU support for this motherboard, looks like unfortunately it does not support the newest AM4 processors. However you will still get a massive performance jump with a CPU upgrade, personally I would go with a 3600X or 3700X if your mainly gaming, or a 3900X if you are doing any kind of productivity or editing work.

Definitely going to be significantly faster than the i5.

yeah I was doing some research after I posted.
My other option would be to drop a 7700K and replace the i5-6600K. That would be the cheaper route (no new RAM and no new HS/Fan)

So I guess then the question is 7700K vs 3900X? I don't do much gaming anymore, just a few titles here and there but they are definitely hampered. I was thinking maybe 7700K and get a 1080 TI? That would then replace my paltry RX 580 too

This 3900x includes the fan, and no ram is needed if you use what the 1200 uses.

And this would be MUCH faster than that 7700k, especially in non gaming apps. 12 cores vs 4 ? Not even close.

Get your BIOS up to 7.20 (mind your bridge BIOS intermediate flashes!), and you should have nearly unlimited Renoir, Vermeer, and Cezanee support.

The CPU support list is incomplete. Go with the BIOS update notes.

"AMD R3 4100/R5 4500/R5 5500 have no iGPU. Please install a graphics card."

Why would they say that if not supported? Yet those CPUs aren't explicitly listed, but SHOULD be supported if you go by the 7.20 patch notes.

If a bios update allow for Zen 3 then a 5700G is the most efficient price/perf wise, dunno how it cost in the US and elsewhere but in Europe it s about 180€ VAT included, comparatively to a i7 7700K it is 2.29x faster in MT and roughly 28% in ST since the ST test below use an non updated PovRay version that underate the 5700G PovRay score by more than 10%.

Interesting.
What CPU would you recommend then?

If Larry's right (which he should be), then i'd go with the Ryzen 5 5500. It's on Amazon for $99 and would be vastly more powerful than that old 7700K processor.

Nice thing is that it comes with the stock Wraith cooler and sips power and runs cool enough.

I would go with a 5700X most likely. Should serve you well for some time to come.

It supports all AM4 cpus.

7.202022/11/1110.78MBInstant Flash
1. Update AMD AM4 AGESA Combo V2 PI 1.2.0.7
2. Support Renoir, Vermeer, and Cezanne CPU
3. Remove Bristol Ridge(AMD A-series/Athlon X4 series) CPU support.
4. Improve GPU compatibility for GeForce RTX 40 series.

*This BIOS doesn't support Bristol Ridge CPU, do NOT update this BIOS if Bristol Ridge CPU is being used.
**It requires to update BIOS to 7.00 before updating this version.
*** User will not able to flash previous BIOS once upgrading to this BIOS version.
