CPU for Video Editing rig

I am building a new machines stickly for vide editing and having a hard time to cgoose betwen CPU,

here is the list that I am looking at within my price range.

1. INTEL CPU Pentium D 945 3.4GHz FSB800MHz 2MBx2 LGA775 Dual Core

2. INTEL CPU Core 2 Duo E6300 1.86GHz FSB1066MHz 2M LGA775

3. INTEL CPU Pentium D 940 3.2GHz FSB800MHz 2MBx2 LGA775 Dual Core

4. AMD Athlon 64 X2 DualCore EE 4200+ (2.2GHz) AM2 Socket L2=512KB x 2 65W

I am having a hard time between AMD and Intel but most people I talked to saying the Intel will be for video editing.

Will be running it with PC6400 2Gb Kit from OCZ

Ur present rig in ur sig aint too bad.But since ur building new go with the core 2 duo E6300.Much more efficient than the 945.
And u can just OC it a bit if u want more performance than it already gives.

There is no reason what so ever to go with a pentium-d anymore. The E6300 will be better at stock speeds and destroy it if overclocked, the 4200+ will give similar performance to the 945 at stock speeds as well, while producing less heat and using a lot less power. I would go with the E6300 and overclock it. My pentium-d's at 3.7ghz got spanked by my X2 @2.618ghz, which gets spanked by my E6600 at 3.1ghz.

This is for my wife so there will be no OC....stock speed only.....then still the E6300 is better?

yup.The E6300 is still the best performer of the lot.

E6300...then in the future when you need a bit of a boost you could with that ram boost it 2.33ghz (667ddr2) on stock HSF, or even 2.8ghz (800ddr2)...It is like a built in upgrade waiting for you...

The Pentium D's are crap IMO...

They dont have a E6300 or 945 but pick the closest to each...As you will see in the encoding and transcoding it is not even close....

Naturally it gets better when you go up, but the E6300 is a very good start.

e6300 should be best for your purpose.

Either the E6300 or the X2 4200 are far better choices...if you're doing efx (dissolves, wipes, graphics, etc...). At stock speeds, they should be about the same...
The reason I mention effects is that this is where the dual cores very much come in handy, otherwise even a single core will do fine for cuts only editing.

I do not suggest overclocking if you are editing professionally (i.e. mission critical), but if it's for home stuff then it should be OK.

Edit:BTW, the Ram you listed is way overkill (unless you're overclocking). Larger amounts of slower Ram would be far more productive...
Also, the video card will be important for previewing your edits prior to rendering them. If you can get even a lower line QuadroFX card, then I suggest you do so.
Slower cards and gaming cards will limit your previewing.

I'd recommend spending the extra $38 on an E6400, since you aren't sure whether it will ever be overclocked or not. You'll want to match it with this motherboard: Gigabyte 965P-S3, and more than one SATA hard drive. This video card should do the trick, although more expensive is always better: Quadro FX540 Here are some other Quadro cards.

Good call myo...the only change I'd reccommend is that he gets a mobo with Firewire on-board (though a Firewire card would probably be cheaper...)

Yeah, since that motherboard has 3 pci slots, even if using a sound card, and a wireless NIC, he'd still have room to add a cheap PCI Firewire card.
