CPU gets bogged down? HELP

When I have music playing and I close an internet explorer or windows explorer window, the music hiccups for a second then resumes playing. Also, at times my mouse will slow down when moving accross the screen, which leads me to believe that it is something to do with the processor. I never used to have this problem, but I reformatted my computer one time and its been doing it ever since.

I have an Athlon xp 2800+, 1gig of ddr, and asus a7n8x-e motherboard.

Please help!

do this first
close all your ifle sharing programs and go to the run command
type cmd
then type "netstat"

If you have port 1034 open you may have the virus that bogs down your pc. I had it once, it happens by just looking at some emails

Yeah how many processes are u running on that computer after a reboot?

Couple of things:

1. when was the last time you defragged your machine. See if when you move your mouse the hard drive is accessed.

2. You may have a root kit installed on your machine stealing CPU cycles. Have you read about the sonly root kit and how inefficient it is? RootkitRevealer is the software to use. Its fairly technical to remove.. Do some research on this topic. Most anti virus and spyware software will not remove root kits

If this has happened all of a sudden then most likely it is software that you installed or something that was installed... Watch your processes in your task manager.. Specificaly look at the System Idle Process... Under most circumstances this should flux between 95 and 99% mostly around 99% if you have nothig running AND NOT MOVING THE MOUSE. If is fluxing continually while not moving the mose sort by CPU util and see if you see anything.. If nothing then most likely you have a root kit installed... If you see something suspicious do a search on the net for that process if you dont know what it is... Once you find it.. Kill it or shut it down... See if your issue goes away.. try this and let us know

stop downloading anything from p2p programs. no spyware no viruses. defrag, disk cleanup

Well.. doesnt matter whether you stopped.. If you have a rootkit on your machine you will have no idea..

Microsoft just released their beta 2 of their anti spyware software... So far the best I have see (not visually but how it works). They claim it will find root kits, etc. Download and install and see what you find...

If that doesnt work.. Reformat and reinstall...
