WOW. I should really be getting this soon, my CPU is startinv to idle at 65 C, and now I CANNOT open any games. It simply shuts itself off. Oh my god I hate you intel stock cooling system.

Turn that thing off!! There is something wrong. There is no way a 3 GHz Northwood is 50 degrees at idle. Mine are less that 30 and a max of about 50. By the way the Intel HSF is very good and the thermal pad is very good. Intel is a billion $$ company, they have engineers to design the HSF, not some goofball making an after market fan in his garage.

It's off don't worry. It's BEEN off, and I've been trying to avoid using it, but I just wanted to see what would happen if I opened a game (AOE).

Is it possible at all that the motherboard is reading the temperatures incorrectly?

Get a glasses cleaning cloth ($1 for 2 at walmart I think), they work well, especially because they're lint free . I would recommend scrubbing down the top of your CPU core with one of those clothes with 95% Isoprophyl Alcohol. Are you putting on a new heatsink or the old one again? If it's still the old one, look into lapping it to make sure you get everything off. Those intel thermal pads stay on forver :disgust:

Putting in a new one.

GLASS CLENAING CLOTH. Lol wow these are vrey *erm* innovative ideas.
Another idea I heard:

Use a blowdryer to heat up the thermal pad.

Oh a very quick question. I don't know if my heatsink uses a backplate to stay on my motherboard (Honestly I don't remember) and I don't feel like taking out my motherboard to check. So just a quikc question: Do intel stock heatsinks have to be attached (I don't remember if I did this or not..)

Lol man. I'm in the massachusetts, it's -7 degrees out there. And in the summer, my computer heats up my room even if the AC is on high. so my comp is off most of the time.

Interesting. I helped build a system for a person (also in MA), and his 2.8C HT Northy gets up in the upper-60C's during load (idles in mid-50C's), and has suffered app-crashes and reboots on rare occassion. CPU was a new OEM bought at Microcenter, heatsink is a Spark III+. Granted, probably should have grabbed the Zalman 7000AlCu, but wasn't sure if that would fit in the case. (Aopen HX-08 or -09 full-tower - not a lot of extra room around the mobo tray, nor does it have very good case cooling.) I know what I'm doing applying TIM, have exellent temps on my own Athlon system. I tried re-installing/re-seating that P4 rig several times, no notable improvement. One thing that comes to mind though, I think that the copper inset in the Spark III+ may have had some un-even "waves" in it. That's probably the real reason. The tower is inset into a computer-shelf sort of thing, further restricting ambient airflow through/around the case. Trying to talk the person into upgrading to a Chieftec case, I just got one myself and it looks like the airflow and room in those is excellent, but no mobo tray like the AOpen has.

I replaced my Intel heatsing with a Zalman 7000B -AlCu and got a 5 deg reduction in load temps with Zalman fan at full speed. AS5 used, of course. It has been shown that the AlCu version cools almost as effectively as the all Cu version. Also, the noise even at highest fan speed is minimal, not even audible over my 6800 Ultra 3D fan speed (a jet engine in comparison). Yes, the xp90 is more efficent; but the Zalman, although not perfect, is quiet and still provides excellent cooling. Someone posted a $5 price for AS5 recently including shipping.
