Regarding to CPU keychains, what is used to drill through a ceramic IC? I've tried and barely scratched the surface

Yikes! I wish I had the link but there was a thread (maybe on HardOCP's forum) on doing just that...

In a nutshell, it's a mess - near impossible with run of the mill and even many specialty tools. Someone did manage to do it and put up a website to show the pics of each step. As a min., you need professional equipment.

You're better off cutting off all the pins and soldering on a hook...

Someone also had a web page showing how to do it like that... That's where I think I saw the suggestion for soldering... but liquid weld would probably work too...

I can't imagine anything that a diamond edged bit couldn't cut, have you tried that?

Hey that's a good idea.. i was wondering what I should do with this old AMD 486 chip that I have... hmmm. Anyone have a link to with some pics... I guess you would cut off the pins then eh...

I haven't done this personally, but the thread that I saw was sortof a "boasting" one when someone simply asked how to make a keychain out of an old 486 CPU and someone else responded "drill a hole"... Well the whole thread sortof degraded down into flames and the instigator finally gave it a shot and failed...

Gosh... I wish I could remember that link to the website of the guy who did it... I think it required a water cooled drill (most likely diamond) and must have taken hours to do...

Hey 486 AMD chips aren't collectables or anything are they??? I mean, the thing is still an incredible thing.. it's insane actually.. we really take 1000mhz for granted.. this little thing here did 66,000,000 switches per second.. that's insane.. I feel bad cutting off all of it's pins.... should I do it?

I couldn't do it.. I brought the wire cutter up to the corner pin.. I couldn't do it.. I have been handling this perfect little piece of human history now for five minutes.. and I can't do it.. it's as vulgar as drilling a hole through an ancestors finger bone and using that for a keychain.. can't do it. I have been trying to figure out a way to preserve it's perfectly linear pins and be able to have it around all the time.. as a desktop item.. I want to encase it in some sort of plastic or something.. so that I can fondle it forever without bending any of the delicate little pins... anyone?

I am not a wuss!!! I go to art school and I'm sensative....

Acrylic embalming kits eh? where can that be found? I'll do it if the price is right.. I am in love with this thing.. never really looked at it so hard before.. I just had it wrapped up and put away.. then I remembered it when I read this thread.. damn.. I LOVE it!!! Seriously.. where? and how?

I think they may have them at the large craft stores. I've seen kits advertised where they come with a mold and everything. Places like Michael's crafts or Frank's Nurseries and crafts might have them.

I went to my schools wood shop and used the drill press for my pentium 200mhz. I had to press extremely hard to get it through. It took a long time to get it through. The drill bits were steel

Well, I was gonna start with a bunch of windowed EPROMs, I'm not sure if solder would hold up under daily use. I'm gonna take a look for some ceramic bits, probably diamond or carbide tip.

Good luck! You may want to document and post pics too in case others are interested!

Okay, went down to the hardware store and picked up a Carbide Tip masonry bit, and a Carbide Spade Tip bit for drilling holes in glass. An recommedations on where to start? (RPM wise and which bit)

That's why I'm going to try ceramic/masonry bits that are carbide tips, the bits in that link had failed and were not intended for ceramics. These bits are designed for glass, concrete, and tiles.

That link is to my web site...thanks for the linkage!

I doubt if your ceramic bit will touch it. I tried a carbide tip ceramic tile bit and managed to get it red-hot (literally) without even scratching the ceramic on an old 486. That stuff is way hard. I wrote an e-mail to the company that used to make that stuff for Intel and they suggested that only diamond or laser tools would touch it. Good Luck!

Put wd-40 and wet the place your going to drill so the heat wont damage your bit so the bit won't loose its performance

Followup: the masonry ceramic bit broke, however the spade tipped bit did make a signifigant dimple before dulling. A diamond bit probably would do the trick if one were available
