CPU Locked

I put an AMD Athlon T-bird 1ghz, OEM version, in an ECS 5a board. I connected the L1 bridges with pencil. I also upgraded the bios for this board, the 010911. When I go to the "CPU PnP Setup Page", in the CMOS, it won't allow me to make any changes. Question: are some AMD cpu's just not unlockable? Even with the method to reconnect the L1 and L7 bridges ?I do understand this board is not very O/C freindly, but, I should at least be able to adjust the bus speed with this bios upgrade.

Is it the 200 or 2666 FSB 1ghz T-Bird?

Chances are that you will need to repencil the L1 bridge some times it dosen't take. For best results try a 3mm mechanical pencil. Goodluck

Do you mean BIOS just won't let you change anything, or do you mean that once you change something, it doesn't post?

I dont think you can change the multiplier through the BIOS with the k7s5a. I can't anyways,,, but I can change the FSB...

3mm pencils? where do u get these? I just sharpen a 5mm (by scribbling on one side) to up my voltage.

Sorry it took me so long to reply, to answer a few replies: 1) the cpu is an Athlon 1.0ghz 266 fsb, OEM.
I used a # 2 pencil to connect L1 and L7 bridges( will try the 3mm mechanical pencil idea, though)
2)When I go to CPU PnP setup, in the bios, it just doesn't let me make any changes. I cannot even go to the other fields to select a change( if there is any) Question: Will the bios detect whether or not I made
a successful attempt to connect the L1 and L7 multiplier and voltage bridges? In other words, maybe this is why I cannot make any manual changes to my multiplier and/or voltage settings in the bios?

by connecting all the L7 bridges you should see the default voltage as 1.85 in the bios. The K7S5A does not recognize any changes to the L1 bridges as it only detects the default multiplier. If the bios you upgraded to is not the overclocking bios it'll only provide you with the standard 100/100, 100/133, 133/100, 133/133 options. You must use the a bios that permits extra FSB settings or software like CPUcool in order to change the FSB beyond what's listed above. CPUcool is Here. EDIT: FYI, in order to change bus speeds in the bios you must use the PG up, PG down keys and not the arrows. If it still isn't allowing you to change the FSB at all try using CPUcool as I have my 1.4 T-Bird@1.54ghz(146.6FSB) using CPUcool and it's super stable.

Here's an easy to follow Guide. just use a magnifying glass and a mechanical pencil or defogger kit and make certain that the bridges don't cross and your good to go.

I recently switched to AMD after using intel for last 5 years and assembled a new system with Soyo Dragon MB 512 crucial DDR 2100 Ram and Athlon 1600 chip In order to change the Multiplier I have to modify the chip right? I know how to do this on a thunderbird non XP chip but not sure if XP's are the same? also have the newest bios for the board installed and noticed when change FSB to 137mhz that the bios says I have a 1700 XP chip instead of just telling me what the new speed is ? is this just a matter of my particular bios (soyo ) or do all XP's overclocked give you this ?

I'm not certain, perhaps someone who does will see this and post the answer or you could ask it as a new topic. As to unlocking the XP it's more involved than the T-Birds, here's a guide that will help you to determine if you want to take a crack at it Link

in the process of unlocking multiplier on athlon 1600 XP chip. first time I ever done this so a little wary. now do I connect ( 3mm pencil ) all of the L1 bridges on the chip ? or just some specific ones ? also read that the XP chips have a indentation in between the bridge that has to be filled prior to closing the bridge with a pencil. what is the best way to do this ?

If u read around this forum. The pencil trick will not work on the XP due to the new "pits" on those L1 bridges on XP. Unlocking is possible but harder. Most ppl here O/C thru FSB for now. Results have be mixed (some good some bad).

I tried the "page up" page down" keys to change the FSB settings in the CPU PnP setup menu. Only choices I have, are 100 and 133, I should have more , I think, since I flashed the bios with ther version that is supposed to give more fsb choices ( 010911 ). I will probably download and install the utility program that is suggested in here, that allows fsb changes.
