CPU/MOBO Question

How do I know if I have a bad CPU or motherboard?
I have a rig that keeps shutting down because either the CPU or the MB thinks it is overheating. I use freon on the CPU to cool it down, then I am able to restart the computer. Before it shutdown, the CPU temperature was reading 45 degrees and the MB 52 degrees. I am using "Real Temp 360".

So either the CPU is bad or the MB is bad. Anyway to tell?
I have no spare parts.

Thanks

There are a few steps you need to take to figure out what the problem is first off. Download the following, coretemp, cpuidhardware monitor and LinX. Open up both core temp and cpuidhardware monitor while idling on your desktop, report the temps to us.

If temps are reasonable, aka 45c, then go ahead and start up a stress testing program like LinX or prime95 or Intelburntest etc. Watch the temps. You are more then likely getting to hot at load and shutting down due to over heating.

Let us know what the temps are, if the temps are not the issue then its the power supply more then likely. Watch your 12volt rails and see what they say in cpuidhardware monitor.

When do the shut downs happen?

Also...freon to cool the cpu down? Like...you have a heatsink on there right?

I do have a heatsink. I use the freon on the heatsink to get it restarted.
I did prime95 and the temperature went up to 56 degrees and stable. The CPU fan was reving a bit faster. When I stopped Prime95, the temperature started to go down, then it shutdown. It will try to keep restarting, but without success, until I cooldown the heatsink.

Is it the MB that shutsdown the computer or is it the CPU that just stops working?

For a quick test, I moved the CPU Fan connector to another place (CaseFan) and the fan was turning much faster. The Temperature went down to 30 degrees. I ran Prime95 again and the temperature was stable at 44 degrees. After that, the computer did NOT shutdown as before.

The fan noise is pretty annoying as it always turns fast.
Are there any other test that could prove that either of those components are not at par?

You dont need to put freon on the heatsink to get it restarted, just wait a minute and it will cool down QUICKLY on its own.

What motherboard and CPU are you using? Did you apply thermal paste correctly to the heat sink fan before mounting it? 56c for a lot of chips is not very warm.

Check in your bios and see what "Thermal Shutdown" temperature is. Also with realtemp what is your "tjmax" at?

The motherboard turns off the power to everything to save the CPU from frying.

A better test would be LinX or Intelburntest.

Did you check to see if the fan was spinning in the original spot? There are options to run the fan at full, by pwm, by voltage, etc for a lot of motherboards.

Running it at full though is your best option in my opinion.
