CPU Overheating Question

Hey guys. Im new to the forum and i heard this is a great site to ask questions if I were having computer issues. Im having an overheating problem with my CPU. while idle, the temps are at 73C to 77C..... pretty high lol. I dont know what the temp is while under load, but its hot enough to shut my computer down the second i think about starting up a game or even while on the net sometimes. My heatsink fan currently does not have any thermal compund on the bottom to assist with the heat transfer from my spu, and i was told to get some for it immediately. But since i dont have the ability to get any for a little while, Is there anything i can use as a substitute? I was told tin foil would work but i dunno....

Do not run your PC without thermal compound or at least thermal pad. You can easily burn out your CPU or, at least, seriously shorten it's lifespan. Wait till you can get to the store or order online.

Thermal paste/grease is only like $5(even at local places) how could you not get some :S

C2D operating temp. is 72 Celsius, any higher than that and it should automatically shutdown - malfunction as a self-preserving mechanism
But seeing as you have AMD, saw the review by Tomshardware? AMD CPUs just keep going until they fry something :>

you need the thermal compound, I hope you've not damaged anything, keep your fingers crossed.
