My friend has been having some issues with his computer. When I looked a the temp it was 220F on his Athlon XP 2500 using the stock heatsink and cooler master fan. I put my old heatsink which was rated for around 2000ghz and the temp dropped to about 160F. Could there be something wrong with the CPU which would make it run hotter then normal or do you think I just need a better heatsink?

Personaly I think that is a read error. I have delt with allot of athlon Xp series and they will not function past 70c period. They will lock up or not even boot. Try to use some different software to check or a thermal probe and digital Doc. Let me know if this helps any.

I agree that it is unlikely that the cpu is even working at over 100°C.

Describing the "issues" might be productive.

Before I put the new heatsink and fan on it was running very bad. I thought it was a RAM problem since the monitor would not turn almost half the times you booted it up. It is still running hot according to the bios (170F), but all the problems are gone relating to random lock ups and the monior has booted up 100% of the time. Also the temp. did change after I put the new heatsink on.

I would check the BIOS to see what the vCore setting is. The CPU may have way more voltage going to it than needed. That could cause overheating.
Socondly, I would look at the HSF mounting closely. Make sure the heatsink is resting fully on the core. Sometimes a improperly oriented heatsink will rest on the socket "ledge" and leave a small gap on one side of the interface.
If that is a true temp reading, something is definitely wrong.

When I lower the CPU voltage the temps do come down, but I lose speed it is a 2500+ XP but I have it running at 1800+ at 165F. Could the CPU be messed up so it produces more heat then usual?

You just have the heatsink backwards, unless your temp sensor is screwed. I'd definitely check that heatsink, though. That was a very common mistake a few years ago, when Athlon XP's were popular.

Now the Athlon XP 2400+ will not turn on at all. I messed around with the heatsink trying a couple diffrent ones and the monitor will no longer turn on. I put my old 1.4 tbird into the system and everything works fine although the temp for the t bird says reserved in the bios. Did I break the Athlon XP 2400?
