CPU Overheating

Hello everyone
My CPU is reaching temperatures of 70-82C. It reaches these temperatures when playing battlefield 3. Just using the internet and idle its around 30-35C. I took the heat sink and fan off and cleaned it, but it didn't make a difference. Does anyone have an idea of why its overheating?
BTW its a stock heat sink fan and the cpu is the corei2500k. its never been overclocked. stock settings. The motherboard is an Asus p8z78pro gen 3 (I believe)

Edit:
I have recorded the CPU Fan speed and its maximum RPM is 2,000- when it is overheating at 72+degrees running games. Is 2,000 a low fan speed?
thanks
thanks

this is fine.what make you think its overeating

the fact that the CPU gets over 80C and the PC gives me a warning about it and never has before. not to mention its winter and its about 30-40F COOLER in the room than it was in the summer and had no issues.

A bit high but nothing to worry about. It's the stock cooler after all. Are you using the stock temp alarms on the board?

Yes I am, everything stock haven't modified anything.
The thing that concerns me aside from the warning is that
In the summer when it was 100F in the room the CPU didn't get this hot. Now it is around 55/60F in the room and its overheating. What about next summer?

Couple questions:

1. Is there no temperature control in this room?
2. Did you record your temps this past summer?

Sorry if this sounds like an obvious question, but: when you cleaned the heatsink and replaced it, did you put in the correct amount (neither too little nor too much) of new thermal paste?

+1Did you apply new thermal paste.

My question as well.

Another thought... have you cleaned out the inside of the PC as well... using compressed air to blow the dust and crap out? Is there a bunch of dust buildup on the aluminum CPU cooling fins?

ketchup- the room doesn't have very good insulation or heat flow. In the summer- temps are over 100 and in the winter its very cold right now. I don't have thermometer but it must be around 55/60 right now
I didn't record temps this summer since there was no issue.

I did a half ass cleanout of the rest of the PC

no new thermal paste

You *always* want to clean and reapply new thermal paste when removing your processor like that. Odds are you accidentally created a pocket of air in the paste and it's not doing its job nearly as well as it should be, or there's not enough of it still on there.

That being said, 70-80C under load is totally safe and normal for a stock cooler, you're not really gonna do much better without a better cooler. If you're getting warnings about temperature i'd be more worried that whatever is giving those warnings isnt reporting it right and it's actually at a dangerous temp.

THERMAL PASTE, carefully applied= CRITICAL.

thanks a lot guys, it sounds like this is normal temp, except its colder right now and the CPU is hotter right now, I am concerned for the summer..
maybe ill try getting a new CPU fan- whats a good one for i5-2500k?
and some thermal paste.
thank you

my thoughts are you should quit dicking around with Speedfan and get some thermal paste from Radio Shack or somewhere. In fact, I would quit using that machine until the paste can be applied. Just my .02

He is correct. Pull the heatsink off again, clean the old paste off with alcohol and a paper towel, and apply a very thin layer of new thermal paste. More is NOT better... google 'TIM application' or something like that and see how it's done. You do not need uber paste, any decent commercial paste will do with your stock cooler. Once you seat the cooler on the fresh paste... do NOT pull it up or off the chip... seat it, squiggle it a hair, and resecure it to the mobo. Enjoy your properly cooled CPU.

I think Smoove is assuming theres nothing on your Heatsink... I'm guessing that you left the OEM thermal pad on the bottom of the heatsink otherwise it'd probably be much hotter than your reporting, if so its still safe to use. especially since you specified that it only reaches those temps under high load.

I'd also like to throw out there the fact you probably do not need a new HSF, and that properly cleaning, applying thermal past, and properly seating the HSF will more than drop your temps to reasonable limits.

In the past I always used.. Arctic silver 5. there was and probably still is very good instructions on there website on how to properly clean, apply and seat the HSF. AS5 may not be the cheapest but its not expensive either in the fact you only use a Dot of it on each application so you always have a lot left over for future use. there site also has optimal storage instruction for left over past.

EDIT: oh yea, he's right in the fact it may not be worth while tinkering with speedfan... it doesnt work for all boards, and 2k rpm maybe the max of your oem fan anyhow.. and you issue is only under load

See that's the only kind I've ever used! Have some in the fridge right now....I once emailed them and they said yes, good to keep it there; they said a test tube they had was just fine after TWELVES YEARS.

But then, I found this site, and everyone here seems to be like, "No, AS5 is crap, we use way better."

AS5 is mediocre... not the best, not the worst. I've not had very good service out of the tube I have... the factory CM paste did better, but much depends on application technique.

Above was my unexpected impression after finding this site and reading threads. I have some AS5 left, will use it up and then move on to better. If I have to learn new application technique, no biggie.
