Yeah, and how much work does any of us get done here? Right.

The "cloud" makes sense for applications that are inherently about information or communication. Nothing has really changed in this regard in decades except for the specific technologies. I mean, the phone system was "the cloud" back in the 1960s or whatever.

Give the cloud 10yrs to mature and you'll be wondering what you did before it ever came along.

I'm sure that lots of uses for it will develop over the next ten years.

I'm also pretty confident that in ten years people who need to get serious work done, or who want to game seriously, will be doing it on their own machines.

There's web browsing...and then there's web browsing with zero lag(aka, the user is the bottleneck). For the latter, an i5 and SATA III SSD is a must, especially if Internet Explorer is being used. Good enough is a relative term. Some people don't mind a little bottlenecking for a few seconds, while others do.

Useful information has been disseminated between users here. People don't know what to do or look for and ask for info. The General Hardware section and Computer Help section represent that.

I don't like the idea of the cloud either, but I am a luddite when it comes to stuff like that and I accept it. Never been on myspace, never had a facebook account, never done twitter or chat, never played online games, etc.

So I know I'm bassackwards in that regard, but I am also observant and I see what everyone else and my brother are doing and they loves them some cloud without really even knowing it.

The cloud has its limits, of course, and 20 yrs ago you would have said the same thing had someone suggested to you that someday you'd be watching videos on the internet that were larger than a postage stamp, let alone streaming entire movies over netflix.

Yes, but there is no personal or precious information on these servers. Even social apps like facebook, if the poster has any sense, have limited personal information. I would be very hesitant to use an online backup for instance, even disregarding the cost and bandwidth constraints because I would not trust that it is either secure from hacking or loss due to server failure or other cause.

I don't care to have my personal info on the cloud, here or on facebook. But I recognize I am an outlier in that regard as facebook participation statistics would indicate. Our peers have little concern with uploading personal info, even the detrimental kind, simply for the sake of having it be easily accessible.

But in the working realm, I couldn't care less how much of it is hosted on servers spread across the world. That is my employer's problem to keep it all orderly and accessible, and it is their loss if they don't.

Raw processor speed can be misleading. A processor is so much more complicated. Multiple pipes, complex instructions, arithmetic units, predication units, Cache Sizes, our of order processing, Memory Controllers, IGP, DMA, you name it. All of this has to work together like a giant orchestra. Then you have to programs written by programmers and operating systems and firmware all designed to take advantage of this.
